Sound Baths in Mattress Stores: A Trend in Los Angeles Wellness

Discover how sound baths, offered in mattress stores, are gaining popularity in Los Angeles as a unique approach to wellness, offering a blend of relaxation, technology detox, and deep rest. From the visionary Alice Moon to the luxury experiences of Barry Raccio, explore how these events tap into the need for tranquility.

The darkness enfolds me as I settle in. I’m not alone; around thirty others, perhaps more, are also experiencing the soundscape generated by quartz bowls. It’s an hour designed to disconnect from technology, a time to reconnect with memory, creativity, and emotion. The room is hushed, a sanctuary within the bustling world. A chime signals the end of the sound bath, gently calling us back to the present.

We emerge from our cozy blankets and the plush mattresses, offering thanks before selecting a crystal or a mantra card, and then we step out of the giant mattress warehouse and into the glare of Glendale Boulevard. This particular sound bath, held within the Atwater Village branch of Mattress Central, is not affiliated with any specific religious or wellness tradition, but it has garnered a devoted following, almost cult-like in its enthusiasm. The event is the brainchild of Alice Moon, a practitioner who offers a range of nontraditional wellness experiences through her company, Moon Soul Sound Baths. The monthly event draws patrons to the store, where they choose a mattress, alone or with a friend, and settle in, trading the world’s clamor for the soothing harmonies of Moon’s quartz bowls. Alice Moon herself is a fascinating figure. She grew up in New Orleans and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina led her to seek a change. She initially planned a month-long trip to Los Angeles, but she found herself staying. “I just wanted to take a month-long trip,” Moon said. “But when I got here I was like, this is the missing puzzle piece that my life needed.” In Los Angeles, she embraced the cannabis culture, becoming a self-taught cannabis industry PR professional and even developing a tech startup to help users locate cannabis edibles based on dietary needs. After a diagnosis of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, a condition that brings with it severe nausea, she felt another need for change. “That kind of flipped my world upside down,” Moon said. “I went on this journey of trying to find things that brought me joy, the same way that cannabis did.” Sound baths emerged as the answer, offering her a sense of calm, positivity, and self-connection. Inspired to share the benefits, Moon began to share her love of sound baths with others. “One day I woke up and I said, you know what? I feel like it is my time to bring that type of peace to other people.” With her social media expertise and public relations savvy, Moon aimed to create an experience that would be both supremely comfortable and memorable. Inspired by other wellness practitioners, Moon connected with Mattress Central to create her own take on the trend. Her sound baths quickly gained popularity, with thousands of views on Threads and hundreds of fans. While Moon's events in the mattress store have clearly resonated within the Los Angeles wellness scene, she isn't alone. In West Hollywood, Barry Raccio also hosts sought-after mattress store sound baths. He comes with 20 years of experience in the wellness world, with a background in Kundalini yoga, breathwork, meditation, and sound healing. In the Hästens mattress showroom on Beverly Boulevard, he conducts a small, exclusive sound bath experience called the “Deep Reset Luxury Sound Bath Experience.” Raccio, who has facilitated sound baths for companies such as Chanel, BMW, and the Parker Hotel, serves tea, plays a variety of instruments (including quartz bowls), and guides participants on ultra-premium Hästens beds, including the $720,000 Grand Vividus mattress, reputed to be the world's most expensive mattress. These luxury mattresses offer a deeply restful experience for the small groups of ten to twelve people who attend, facilitating a deeper healing of the nervous system. This experience is intended to be a profound hour away from the chaos of modern life. It is a more intimate and opulent version of Moon’s baths, with a similar healing effect. One can even book the Grand Vividus for the occasion. “Rest is a luxury,” Raccio says. “Because are so comfortable, they conform to bodies without needing anything under your knees or even a pillow. You're just so supported that the nervous system drops in much quicker and the relaxation process is even more profound. The effects of the sound healing even go deeper.” The mattress store sound baths offered by both Raccio and Moon tap into a collective need for rest, and also offer a respite from technology. The chakra-balancing properties of the sound baths, combined with the relaxing environment of a mattress store, help guests reach deep levels of relaxation. Deep sleep and even snoring are common at these events. “At the mattress store, it's like, you can really, really relax. And I just want people to feel comfortable and safe and, you know, just a moment for them,” Moon said. “That's what it really is. It's a moment for everyone to just, like, be there for themselves.
