This article looks at recent announcements from OpenDrives on its software-defined storage solution, the release of 24G+ SAS with new HDD and SSD features and Micron ’s latest data center PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSD , the 9550, that supports AI workloads.
A major computer architecture drive involves breaking up conventional servers from where everything used by the processers lives in the server box, to separating at least some of basic resources such as processing, digital storage and memory in pools outside of the individual servers. These component pools can then provide resources as needed for particular processes using software . These processes can run in virtual machines or containers.
OpenDrives, a provider of digital storage for media and entertainment workflows is extending its software-defined solutions in its Atlas 2.8 release to create a composable software-defined storage solution. With this release OpenDrives is providing a storage software platform where storage pricing is not based upon capacity. Instead, feature sets useful for specific market segments can be combined into tiered bundles.
Micron, in advance of the 2024 FMS Conference, announced a new data center SSD, its 9550 NVMe SSD running on PCIe Gen5.The company said that this product is targeted for AI workloads with high power efficiency. This product uses Micron’s controller, NAND, DRAM and firmware. It offers 14.0 GB/s sequential reads and 10.0 GB/s sequential write. Randon reads are at 3.3 MIOPS and write are at 400 KIOPS.
