The Roots of Femicide: Confronting Patriarchy Behind the Shreveport Tragedy
FemicidePatriarchyDomestic Violence

A critical examination of the recent mass murder in Shreveport, arguing that domestic violence and femicide are products of deep-seated patriarchal structures rather than merely mental health issues.

The tragedy that unfolded in Shreveport , Louisiana, stands as the most lethal mass shooting in the United States over the past two years, yet it remains fundamentally rooted in the devastating reality of domestic violence rather than a random act of public aggression. Shamar Elkins, a local resident, reportedly turned his weapon on his family, claiming the lives of eight children—seven of whom were his own—in a horrific act that has left the nation reeling.

Amidst the carnage, the sole survivor among the children escaped by fleeing to the roof. The perpetrator also targeted two women, including his wife, Shaneiqua Pugh, leaving them wounded. As a native of Shreveport, witnessing this level of violence in my own hometown brings a haunting familiarity to the headlines. My own mother, who sought refuge in this city after surviving three separate abusive relationships, serves as a testament to the precarious nature of survival. While she lived to tell her story despite being shot and assaulted, countless other Black women are not afforded the same grace, as evidenced by the growing list of fatal domestic incidents involving prominent figures and everyday citizens alike across the country. Public discourse often rushes to label such perpetrators as suffering from mental health crises, using individual struggles as a convenient shield to avoid confronting deeper societal rot. While Shamar Elkins allegedly grappled with suicidal ideation, mental health is a woefully insufficient explanation for the cold-blooded execution of one’s own family. Instead, we must confront the systemic influence of patriarchy. Within the frameworks of white supremacist capitalist patriarchy, men are conditioned to view their worth through a lens of ownership, measuring their status by the size of their families and the total control they exert over their households. When these constructs are challenged by women seeking independence or agency, the reaction is often explosive, lethal violence. The alarming rise of the manosphere and right-wing extremist ideologies has emboldened a worldview where women and children are perceived merely as property to be discarded at will, rather than human beings with individual dreams and autonomy. This trend is exacerbated by a cultural and political environment that actively regresses in its treatment of women. From legislative attacks on reproductive health to the infusion of Christian nationalism into public policy, the message is clear: women are expected to submit. In cities like Shreveport, where traditional hierarchies are enforced by political leadership and symbolic displays of religious dogma, the choice to leave a dangerous partner often carries a death sentence. The United States is currently facing an escalating crisis of femicide, a reality once unfairly relegated to descriptions of developing nations. Black women, in particular, face disproportionate levels of lethal violence. We must move beyond the tired narrative that these men are simply bad apples in need of therapy. These massacres are the logical, horrific conclusion of a society committed to the patriarchal domination of women. Until this country abandons its obsession with enforcing gendered submission, women who choose to assert their right to live safely will continue to pay the ultimate price
