SAN ANTONIO - Palo Alto College has declared September 17th ' Willie Velasquez Day' in honor of the social activist 's legacy and the importance of voting in the United States.
The campus celebrated this announcement with a ceremony held Tuesday afternoon followed by a voter registration panel. The panel discussion was led by Kayla Muzquiz, 1046 Precinct Coordinator and dedicated Foster Care Advocate. Other guest speakers included Joseph M. Fonseca Jr., Political Science Instructor at Palo Alto College and Rebecca Flores, a renowned farm worker rights activist.“Willie Velasquez’s legacy serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of civic engagement,” said Dr. Robert Garza, President of Palo Alto College. “It’s an honor to offer this tribute to Willie for his community leadership and for his tireless efforts to call our community to participate in the democratic process.” The event also showcased a special exhibition of national awards and personal memorabilia from Willie Velasquez.
