Mississippi averages a little less than 150 venomous snake bites each year, according to the Mississippi Poison Control Center. The University of Mississippi Medical Center said about 20% of bites are “dry,” which means no venom was injected.
PINE BELT, Miss. - According to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife , Fisheries & Parks, there are 55 species of snakes in the state, including six that are venomous.“Cottonmouths are ones you usually find around water and hardwood areas and forests,” said Jessie Tisdale with the Forrest County Extension Office .
“Rattlesnakes are something you will find a lot around here. Copperheads can be found in the woods and around water as well.” The eastern diamondback, timber and pygmy rattlesnakes are considered the three most common rattlers in South Mississippi. They’re usually recognizable by their tan rattle and triangular heads, distinguishing them from common non-venomous species like the black racer. “As you can tell, they have the flat triangular head and the eyes that look like the pit viper over here,” Tisdale said. Mississippi averages a little less than 150 venomous snake bites each year, according to the Mississippi Poison Control Center. “Most of the times when somebody gets bit, it’s because they’re harassing, killing or trying to catch the snake,” Tisdale said. The University of Mississippi Medical Center said about 20% of bites are “dry,” meaning no venom was injected. Wyth Collins with Em Serv Ambulance Service shared that treatment varies depending on the victim and the snake. “There’s no way to measure how much venom they receive,” said Collins. “So, they can have anywhere from a dry bite to a full venom load.”“It’s a lot of bacteria we’re not regularly exposed to in an animal bite,” said Collins, “So, antibiotics at a minimum.” Collins’ biggest piece of advice is to start decluttering spaces at your home where snakes could be hiding and remember to watch your step.Family files lawsuit saying high school cheerleader, 17, died from drinking Alani Nu energy drinksTwo shot at Mobile apartment complexSuspect reaches 90 mph in 25 mph zone during Mobile police chase
