A long-smoldering dispute between the city of San Marcos and Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra has burst into a full blaze, with Becerra accusing city officials of a “political attack” against him and threatening legal action. The conflict revolves not around a matter of policy but rather a piece of land that holds a tiny brick building next to a busy railroad.
Business leaders dispute notion Texas economy is slowing Since 2013, the city has owned about half the land the building sits on, at 201 South LBJ Drive, about two blocks south of San Marcos' courthouse square. In 2015, Becerra, who was not yet county judge, bought the building itself and began leasing it to a series of retail operations. It now houses a Mexican joint known as Las Dos Fridas.
