Accusing city officials of a political attack, County Judge Ruben Becerra is threatening legal action in a dispute over a lease he holds on a city property.

A long-smoldering dispute between the city of San Marcos and Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra has burst into a full blaze, with Becerra accusing city officials of a “political attack” against him and threatening legal action. The conflict revolves not around a matter of policy but rather a piece of land that holds a tiny brick building next to a busy railroad.

Business leaders dispute notion Texas economy is slowing Since 2013, the city has owned about half the land the building sits on, at 201 South LBJ Drive, about two blocks south of San Marcos' courthouse square. In 2015, Becerra, who was not yet county judge, bought the building itself and began leasing it to a series of retail operations. It now houses a Mexican joint known as Las Dos Fridas.

Hays County moves ahead with plan for new civic center Mistake by the city When the city opted in 2018 to forgive Becerra for a total of $13,119.68 in unpaid rent, critics raised questions over whether he had been given special treatment. The now-defunct news website San Marcos Corridor News published articles decrying 'The Dixie Cream Sweetheart of a Deal' — a reference to the building's prior tenant, the Dixie Cream Do-Nut Shop.
