Cheryl Hines, wife of presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has been more engaged in promoting her personal projects, such as her skincare line Hines+Young, rather than her husband's campaign. Social media reflects her enthusiasm for her new business venture and podcast appearances rather than political activities.
For her part, Hines saw the final season of Curb air earlier this year, and she continues to be very enthusiastic about the plastic-free skincare and health line that she launched with her daughter in 2023.
A political wife exhausted by the grueling demands of the campaign trail? Not here! A look at Hines’ public-facing presence ignores Kennedy's campaign almost entirely in favor of content around Curb and Hines' other publicity outings and podcast appearances; the actor shares shots of herself grinning with tubs of Hines+Young moisturizer more often than with her husband of 10 years. Unlike the stereotypical political spouse, Hines isn’t standing behind her husband onstage, her beatific smile visible over his shoulder from the audience. She barely acknowledges the man exists, despite Kennedy telling the New York Times in 2023, shortly after he launched his presidential campaign, that “I think ultimately if I get elected, Cheryl will have played a huge role in that.” He continued, “She’s an enormous asset to me, and I don’t think we’ve really unveiled her in her true power yet.” Hines seems to have sidestepped that imagined role from the very beginning, opting out of unveiling that power. In an interview for the same article, she told the Times, “I support Bobby and I want to be there for him, and I want him to feel loved and supported by me. And at the same time, I don’t feel the need to go to every political event, because I do have my own career.” Those “wants” are really working overtime, aren’t they? Kennedy announced his intention to run for president on April 19, 2023. On April 22, 2023, Hines announced that #earthdayiseveryday. A few weeks later, on May 23, she just couldn’t contain herself about “one of the most exciting days of my life”: Getting to share the news that she and her daughter were working on that skincare line. Her spokesperson did release a decidedly tepid statement the same day as Kennedy's announcement to outlets who asked: “My husband, Robert Kennedy Jr. announced today he will be running for President and I support his decision,” the released statement read. “He is a fearless leader who understands the needs of the American people and has devoted his life fighting for democracy.” The vibe is that of the mom at the grocery store who tells you that her child dressed himself and that he's always been “very creative.' Plenty to say, it would seem, that remains unsaid. On Hines' own accounts, nada. Her Instagram is bare of any photos of campaign rallies, though she did attend some, or even mentions of Kennedy’s run or live-wire political profile, as is her X account, save for a single tweet on August 23 acknowledging that the campaign was over, a wonder of passive voice and distancing oneself. “The decision has been made to suspend my husband's, Robert Kennedy Jr.'s, presidency and I'd like to extend a sincere, deeply heartfelt thank you to every person who has worked so tirelessly and lovingly on his campaign,” she wrote. “They have accomplished feats that were said to be impossible. They have gathered over a million signatures, more than any candidate in history, and have achieved ballot access across the country despite the roadblocks and lawsuits that have been brought against them for the sole purpose of keeping Bobby off of the ballots so no one would even have the opportunity to vote for him. I deeply respect the decision Bobby made to run on the principle of unity. Over the last year and a half, I have met some extraordinary people from all parties—Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. It's been my experience that the vast majority of all parties are truly good people who want the best for our country and for each other. It has been an eye-opening, transformative, and endearing journey.” Note the lack of “we,” the abundance of “they.” She wasn’t taking any credit for gathering those signatures. She never publicly stated her belief that her husband would be a good president, only going so far as mustering that she “deeply respect the decision Bobby made to run on the principle of unity.” In that same Times interview, Hines talked about improv, where she got her start acting, saying, “you have to commit 100 percent or it’s not funny or interesting.” Far be it for us to put a percentage on her commitment to Kennedy’s political ambitions, but it would appear to be below that threshold. The best she could summon on a June 2023 call between Kennedy and Elon Musk broadcast on X discussing the campaign, for example, was “really interesting and at times exciting.” She told the Times she hadn’t thought about being first lady: “I haven’t really spent time in that space, because we’re not there yet.” Even Kennedy knows that she was essentially giving him the “yes, dear” treatment: In August, after he suspended his campaign and endorsed Trump, he told TMZ, “This is a really difficult issue for Cheryl. This is the opposite of what she would want to do. She went along with it because she loves me and she wanted to be supportive of me, but it was not something that she ever encouraged. I would say, her trepidation about this and her discomfort with this were the dominant feelings.” Hines is a registered Democrat who has publicly called some of her husband’s comments “reprehensible” and has said they “differ on many current issues,” without specifying what those differences are. So, as the second Trump administration looms and her husband is poised to “go wild on health,” in Trump's words, pushing to change vaccine requirements, remove fluoride from water, and more if his nomination to appointed secretary of health and human services is approved, Hines is in the increasingly rare position of being a woman with choices. One option: Hines could divorce Kennedy. She can point to the Nuzzi situation, which was reportedly consensual, if generally icky. A former babysitter has also made credible allegations of sexual assault, as reported by Vanity Fair . The animal stuff is disturbing, and the anti-vaccine stance and false claims that stir up hysteria and dangerous medical situations that can result in entirely preventable deaths is not ideal either. Hines’ home state of California does still have no-fault divorce—but maybe not for much longer, if the Republicans have anything to say about it. She could stay married to him and order up the Melania Trump Starter Pack: Dark, oversized sunglasses and a tight-lipped grimace pair gorgeously with legally wedded resentment and a sprinkling of “no comment” responses. Hell, Melania isn’t even planning to move into the White House this time around, sources say. Maybe she and Hines could hang out in Florida , get some brunch, and not talk about the havoc their husbands are wreaking on the country. You can be legally married and quiet, as both women have demonstrated. Last Thursday, Hines was spotted on Kennedy's arm at a Mar-a-Lago party, yukking it up with Team MAGA, Trump himself reportedly included. Maybe this is the sacrifice she's willing make in the name of plentiful shrimp cocktail. A third option would be for Hines to take her own philosophy about improv to heart: Commit, 100 percent, and lie in the bed she’s made. The apparent path of willful ignorance and silence Hines has taken so far, as if not acknowledging Kennedy's campaign and controversial views would make it so that they might as well not exist, is no longer one she can walk, given the announcement of Kennedy's nomination and seeming inevitability of his continuing presence in the political arena. Welcome to Washington, Cheryl. What'll it be? Representatives for Cheryl Hines Robert F. Kennedy Jr. did not respond to Vanity Fair's request for comment.
