A British YouTuber has been ordered to pay substantial damages after being found liable for libel and harassment related to his unfounded claims about the tragic 2018 murders of Shanann Watts and her daughters.
A British YouTuber, Alan Vinnicombe, has been ordered to pay £40,000 in damages after a libel suit brought by Franklin Rzucek, the brother of Shanann Watts , who was tragically murdered along with her two daughters, Bella and Celeste, in Colorado in 2018.
The case stemmed from Vinnicombe’s YouTube channel, ‘Armchair Detective Blue,’ where he propagated ‘wholly unfounded conspiracy theories’ implicating Mr. Rzucek in a supposed cover-up surrounding the murders. The channel, which once boasted over 79,000 followers before its closure in 2023, featured 184 videos primarily focused on the Watts case, alongside content about other high-profile cases like the disappearance of Nicola Bulley.
The High Court in London ruled in Mr. Rzucek’s favor without a trial last February, finding that Vinnicombe had failed to comply with court rules. Deputy High Court Judge Dan Squires KC subsequently awarded the £40,000 in damages and issued an injunction preventing Vinnicombe from repeating the defamatory allegations. The judge acknowledged the seriousness of the claims, noting they were published to a significant audience interested in the Watts case and caused Mr. Rzucek considerable distress.
However, the awarded damages were tempered by the fact that Mr. Rzucek primarily resides in the United States, limiting the scope of his reputation within the UK jurisdiction. The harassment claim was dismissed as Mr. Rzucek was not within the jurisdiction at the time of the alleged harassment. Vinnicombe, a semi-professional poker player, operated multiple YouTube channels dedicated to dissecting true crime cases.
He represented himself in court, admitting his inability to adhere to court rules and claiming he lacked the financial resources to fight the claim or pay damages. He maintained his assertions were not conspiracy theories but ‘facts’ and accused Mr. Rzucek of pursuing him for financial gain. The original murders, committed by Shanann Watts’ husband and father of the children, Chris Watts, involved the strangulation of his pregnant wife and the subsequent disposal of his daughters’ bodies in oil tanks.
Watts is currently serving five consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. The case highlights the legal ramifications of spreading misinformation and defamatory content online, particularly concerning sensitive and tragic events. The court’s decision underscores the importance of responsible online behavior and the protection of individuals from baseless accusations and harassment
