SAPR strikes out against sexual assault with free bowling event for service members, families

The DOD reported 8,195 reports of sexual assault in FY2024.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - On Friday, Sexual Assault Prevention and Response hosted its final event for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. To end the month of awareness, SAPR invited service members and their families to a free afternoon of bowling and pizza at Polar Bowl and provided sexual assault awareness materials.

“It’s a problem in every community,” Kelley Graham, a sexual assault response coordinator for JBER, said. Department of Defense’s fiscal year 2024 Annual Report on Sexual Assault in the Military , the department received 8,195 reports of sexual assault. That was 320 fewer reports than in fiscal 2023, according to the department of defense. During the event on Friday, SAPR shared resources for service members and their families.

Graham said she hopes people will be able to connect a face to the services they provide.

“Well, because when we do spend a lot of time during the year, when we do training with folks, it is a very serious topic,” Graham said. “We want to make sure that people feel comfortable with us as people and knowing, hey, there are things out there because there are a lot of different agencies that can help with things, and sometimes it’s confusing. ” Graham said that SAPR is a “no wrong door” agency.

She said if someone approaches SAPR with a problem it cannot solve, the agency will point them in the right direction.at its 24/7 sexual assault crisis hotline: 384-7272. Family Advocacy ProgramCivilians can reach out to Standing Together Against Rape, known as STAR Inc., for resources at 276-7279. For situations involving domestic violence, they can reach out to AWAIC at 279-9581.
