Department of Transportation monitors stretch of highway for ice and rock falls during spring thaw.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -The Department of Transportation has a temporary traffic diversion in place on the Seward Highway as crews monitor for ice and rock falls during spring break-up season. According to the DOT, a rock fall occurred Monday near milepost 113 on the Seward Highway , where a driver’s vehicle was

“This is a very dynamic corridor,” said Danielle Tessen, DOT spokesperson. “Conditions are always changing. And so, what we saw on Monday was essentially a rock fall, but this time of year, we do see ice fall as well.”

The stretch of road connecting Anchorage through Turnagain Arm is known for rock and ice falls due to spring’s break-up season weather, according to the DOT. The freezing and thawing cycles create conditions for ice and rocks to fall onto the road.

“So, as you have that freezing at night, you have thawing during the day. And then if we have rain or wind on top of that, which this area does see, that just adds, adds to it all,” Tessen said.

The DOT does have past mitigation efforts in place. The DOT has anchored wire mesh in place on the slopes to help manage falling debris. The department plans to keep the diversion ongoing as long as movement continues.

“And this time of year, is when we expect more movement because of all of these dynamic things happening,” Tessen said. The DOT actively monitors the area and asks drivers on the Seward Highway to keep moving, stay alert and report any concerns to 911. The DOT also adds it is in the process of designing a rock fall mitigation project on the Seward Highway.
