Garrett Nicholas was pronounced dead 'several hours' after being taken to Paoli Hospital, officials said.
Garrett Nicholas, a 21-year-old junior at West Chester University and member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, was struck and killed by a car early Sunday morning near his fraternity house.
Crash happened near fraternity houseNicholas was crossing South High Street around 1:30 a.m. when he was hit, according to his fraternity brother.Police said he was taken to Paoli Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Vehicle and driver identifiedSources told NBC 10 that the car involved in the crash has been identified.
Friends remember Nicholas'I think a lot of us are having such a hard time coping with and understanding, like, why him, because he really was just such a rare kind of kid to find,' one student said. 'He was such a genuine kid, and he was someone that you could really just look to, and it was hard to be in a bad mood around him,' friend Jimmy Kane said.
Community leaves flowers and gathers to mournThroughout the day, people left flowers at the fraternity house where Nicholas lived, just across the street from the accident site. By nightfall, the stairway was filled with flowers as brothers, friends, and fellow students gathered to honor his memory. 'It's rough, but I know he's doing all right. He's fine,' Kane said.'I feel like support right now is what this community really needs. And to just look across the street and see everyone come together, you'd really show how strong our community is here at West Chester,' another student said.
Police said the incident was not a hit-and-run, and the driver involved has been identified.No charges have been filed.
