Seven Hills woman launches The Giving G to help families battling systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis

SEVEN HILLS, Ohio - A northeast Ohio mom is turning her family’s nightmare into a lifeline for families across the country after her toddler son was diagnosed with a dangerous and extremely rare disease.

His fingers swelled and a head-to-toe rash covered his body. Four months later, doctors diagnosed Giovanni with systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis. The rare disease attacks the heart, the lungs and every organ in the body. It can turn life-threatening overnight.

“He can be running around his typical happy self one day, wake up with a flare, and his life is in danger,” Giampaolo said. Giovanni falls into the most severe category. He is now two years old and has never gone into remission.

“I am forever grateful to her and the way that she pushed for our child,” Giampaolo said. That gratitude fueled Giampaolo to act. She started the nonprofit The Giving G to help other families fighting the same battle. The organization pays for hotel stays, airfare, gas and medical expenses.

It ships activity kits to children sitting through hours-long infusions.

“It shouldn’t have to be that way — where you have to choose between being with your family or driving through the night because you can’t afford a hotel stay,” Giampaolo said. “When you have this gut feeling, you just have to listen to what your gut is saying and push and advocate. You are going to be the only person that can provide them a voice,” Giampaolo said.

Any family in the U.S. with a child diagnosed with systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis can apply for support through
