Now, a panel of federal district judges in Birmingham are ordering plaintiffs in the two Congressional districts voting map cases to file their briefs by Friday, May 15 at noon.

The decision from the Supreme Court clears the way for the state to use the Alabama Legislature’s map from 2023, which included six safe Republican districts. Courts had previously blocked the map, ruling that it was unconstitutional under the Voting Rights Act.allowing it to void the results of a May 19 primary for some congressional districts and instead hold a new primary under the revised district boundaries. Alabama had asked for a expedited decision ahead of the primary.

: the 1st, 2nd, 6th and 7th. The special primary is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 11, with no runoff, her office said. Winners will advance to the Nov. 3 general election, according to Ivey’s order. The panel of federal judges is giving the state until Monday, May 18 at noon to respond to the question of why the 2023 Congressional map the state intends to use should or shouldn’t be affected by the Louisiana decision made by the Supreme Court.

The court is also ordering Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen to file a brief by Friday, laying out the practicalities of administering the new special primaries ordered by Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, including a deadline for when Allen would need the electoral map set for those Aug. 11 elections.
