CLEVELAND , Ohio - Darryl Wright has lived at the Longfellow Senior Housing on East 140th street for a couple months. He relies on his motorized scooter to get around. His daughter, Brandi says she noticed a problem and a major concern at the apartment one day when the fire alarms went off.
“That showed everyone what I had been stating previously that that was a major concern,” says Brandi. There are multiple exits for the building, however each one uses stairs, which makes Brandi concerned because her father can’t use them. “How do the people that are on rollators, in wheelchairs, or on scooters, how do they exit the building in case of an emergency?” asks Brandi. “There is no ramp for them to get out. This is a beautiful place. I love how they re-did it. It Is great. They have the wide doors for the seniors. This side was built for the seniors and I think someone missed the mark on building a ramp and putting in emergency lights.” Brandi and Darryl showed 19 News around the building and pointed our exactly where they think a ramp should be. They suggested putting one right next to the elevator that would lead to the community room and eventually out the back door. “From here you can exit and go outside. So either of these sets of stairs can be made a ramp. They can make this side a ramp and still have stairs so that way there would be two ramps,” says Brandi. Brandi says she called the office for Longfellow Apartments about her concerns. They directed her to the owners of the building, Vesta Corporation.19 News also called Vesta Corporation and left a message, but we are waiting on a response. Brandi then got in contact with Councilman Michael Polensek. He told her that Vesta Corp. used historic tax credits in order to fund the remodeling of Longfellow, classifying the building as a historic landmark. That means no alterations can be made to the exterior of the building. However, Brandi says Councilman Polensek is working to try and get a ramp inside the building next to the elevator.“I would just like for something, if not me, but for people coming behind me because there are going to be other seniors who are going to need scooters, wheelchairs, rollators and we need assistants,” says Wright.Woman dies after pushed down steps, suspect arrested: Cleveland PoliceMentor Lagoon trail closes due to eroding Lake Erie shoreline
