Ohio could soon take a major step toward statewide paid family and medical leave.
a bipartisan proposal, also known as the paid family leave act , would create a state-run program that gives eligible workers up to 14 weeks of paid leave in a 12-month period for family needs or their own medical issues.
“I had a cesarean, so I needed a lot of help,” Lauren Morgan said. “Every week was like a massive milestone with the twins,” Morgan said. Right now, many families don’t have that option. Supporters of the bill say most Ohio workers don’t receive paid family leave through their employer—often forcing parents back to work sooner than they’re ready.
“I only got two weeks of paid leave from my job, which was nowhere near enough,” Reifsnyder said. “It will help to grow our population by telling those workers who want to start families or to add to their families that Ohio has their back,” Blessing said. State Senator Beth Liston who is the other sponsor of the bill said the financial hit of unpaid time off can be difficult for families to recover from.
“It’s really hard to recover from a financial hit of taking an unpaid leave,” Liston said. “Ohioans know this and want a system in place that can fix this. This bill will provide important security for when these critical life events occur, as it has in the 14 other states that have passed a program like this. ”For single moms like Alivia Gaillard, the proposal could provide more stability.
“I travel as a nursing assistant, but I unfortunately lost my job due to me having many responsibilities being single and I actually really look into any way of resources that single families can actually be able to come across so I think this is a good opportunity for many people. ,” Gaillard said.
