As it nears the 30-year anniversary of its multi-platinum debut album, Third Eye Blind's founding members -- the two that remain with the band, at least -- express gratitude for their longevity and say the 'flow' that exists with the lineup 'makes it easy' to be part of this band.' The group performs Friday, July 5, at the Blossom Music Center.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Even after a six-times platinum debut album in 1997, Brad Hargreaves says he was so uncertain about his bandfuture that he moved to Los Angeles from the band’s home base in the San Francisco Bay Area, just in case.

“I thought the band would end, and I wanted to be somewhere I could get more work,” Hargreaves says via phone from Chicago during Third Eye Blind’s latest Summer Gods Tour,on Friay. “There was some personal strife within the band. It didn’t seem plausible that it would be a going concern for another five years, even at that point, let alone another 30 or whatever.”Third Eye Blind is, of course, best-known for that first album and its Top 10 hits “Semi-Charmed Life,” “How’s It Going to Be” and “Jumper,” all multi-platinum in their own right. But the band -- albeit with only drummer Hargreaves and frontman Stephan Jenkins from the original lineup -- is still with us, with six more albums to its credit and more music coming, Hargreaves promises. “The longevity has definitely surprised me. It’s shocking,” the drummer says with a laugh. “Y’know, about once a year Stephan and I sit down and talk and we just can’t believe the opportunities that are still placed in front of us, the things we get involved to do, still. We definitely grinded for a lot of years to get to this point, but now it’s such a flow state it makes it easy to be part of this band. This year, in fact, marks the 25th anniversary of the road to that longevity being affirmed. Despite the inter-band tension Hargreaves mentioned, Third Eye Blind managed to avoid a bad sophomore slump with its sophomore album, “Blue,” in 1999. It was not quite the phenomenon of its predecessor, but it was still platinum and sold more than two million copies worldwide, and it launched another couple of hits -- “Never Let You Go” and “Deep Inside of You” -- that remain part of Third Eye Blind’s A-list canon. “I love the kind of fearlessness that we had going into that second record,” Hargreaves recalls. “We had the huge first record and there was pressure on us, but there’s some, like, different types of arrangements on that record as well as really free-flowing, playing. I know I was just going for it; that’s probably one of the more sophisticated drumming records that I’ve done with Third Eye Blind. “I’m proud there wasn’t any compromise in our approach to making , especially coming back off of something that was so huge.” Since then the band has been through more than 10 other musicians, releasing its seventh studio album, “Our Bande Apart,” back in 2021 as well as the acoustic “Unplugged” the following year. The same kind of commercial pressures no longer exist for Jenkins, Hargreaves and company, which the drummer says is only been to the band’s benefit. “I don’t think we get stressed about anything too much anymore,” Hargreaves says. “We have our own record company . We make our own schedules. We’re very fortunate. Maybe some pressure would help us accomplish things a little bit faster these days, but, like I said, we have an incredibly comfortable kind of flow with the band right now that I wouldn’t trade for anything.” Third Eye Blind is, in fact, working on new music according to Hargreaves. He says the band recently laid down about a half-dozen tracks in Los Angeles that are waiting for Jenkins to write lyrics and melodies. “The raw tracks sound really good,” Hargreaves reports, although work on them won’t continue until after the summer tour with Yellowcard and Arizona.“We are so fortunate; we haven’t put out a record since 2021, and this is the best-selling tour we’ve ever had,” Hargreaves says. “But that being said, when we do work we take it very seriously, and we always are thinking about how we can do it better. “We have this mentality that this is our life’s work. We’re still writing music. We really enjoy performing. It’s all really fun still, so it’s like, why wouldn’t you do it?” Third Eye Blind, Yellowcard and Arizona perform at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 5 at Blossom Music Center, 1145 W.
