CLEVELAND , Ohio - Union members made their presence felt Thursday afternoon at Cuyahoga Community College ’s Board of Trustees meeting.Verita Bell, a college employee, joined fellow members at the meeting.

“I came through this institution. I don’t know if I can do this,” Bell said, crying as she spoke about the college’s importance to her. “It means a lot to watch people change their lives in this institution,” Bell added. “This place wouldn’t function without the people that help the students when they come through the door.” The SEIU represents nearly 200 support and office staff employed at the college. The two sides have been negotiating since last October.“Leadership will continue working toward a resolution with SEIU 1199 and intends to stay at the table until a resolution is reached,” Presti said. The school said in a statement their benchmark for a Cleveland living wage is $43,014 a year, according to the MIT Living Wage Calculator. While the union says they make more than that amount on average, it’s not keeping up with costs. “Considering the cost of living has gone up well more than 1 to 2 percent most years...they’re not making comparatively what they used to make 10 years ago,” Nicole Sigurdson, administrative organizer for SEIU 1199 said.“To watch the return of our efforts being diminished over time is heartbreaking,” Bell said.“If the staff is affected by it, it could be a lot more stressful on the people on the outside,” first-year student Zachary Vuyancih said. Meanwhile, Tryshawn Dantzler, another student, suggested involving student government in the process. “I would at least ask them to run that through student government, let student government have at least an ear to what’s going on,” he said.“I don’t think that people see us everyday. They talk about us but they don’t see us. And now’s the time for us to be seen,” Bell said.‘Litter-ally over you!’: Put your ex’s name in Summit County shelter litter box for Valentine’s Day
