Russian Oligarch Ordered to Pay Ex-Wife £100 Million After Secret Family Revealed

A British-naturalized Russian oligarch, Mikhail Kroupeev, has been ordered by the High Court to pay his ex-wife, Elena Kroupeeva, £100 million in cash and property following the discovery of his secret second family. The settlement includes a London mansion, properties in Portugal and Russia, and substantial lump sum payments.

A Russia n oligarch, now a British citizen, has been mandated by the court to provide his former wife with a substantial settlement of £100 million, encompassing both cash and property.

Mikhail Kroupeev and Elena Kroupeeva initially married in Russia in 1988, subsequently relocating to the United Kingdom in 1993. Their 35-year marriage dissolved in 2023 following the revelation of Mr. Kroupeev’s clandestine second family – a wife and child residing in Russia, with the child born around 2008. This discovery triggered a protracted and contentious financial dispute that commenced in 2024, pending their official divorce.

The case unveiled a complex web of Mr. Kroupeev’s business interests, including a company holding a significant contract to export oil from Syria, valued between $1.5 and $2 billion, and another firm involved in oil and gas exports in Kazakhstan. Initially, Mr. Kroupeev resisted the valuation of these assets, leading to a 28-day prison sentence for contempt of court.

The four-day High Court hearing in February saw Ms. Kroupeeva’s legal team petition the judge for the transfer of the former marital home – a substantial seven-bedroom property in St John’s Wood, London, estimated at £14.4 million – alongside properties in Russia and Portugal collectively valued at £26 million, and a series of lump sum payments totaling £32.1 million. Mr. Kroupeev, representing himself remotely, countered by proposing a significantly lower settlement of just £300,000, despite acknowledging the transferability of the properties.

Deputy High Court Judge James Ewins KC ultimately ruled in favor of Ms. Kroupeeva, ordering Mr. Kroupeev to pay £60 million in cash and transfer ownership of the properties located in London, Portugal, and Russia. The court proceedings highlighted the opulent lifestyle enjoyed by the couple during their marriage, characterized by luxurious accommodations, frequent private jet travel – including annual Christmas trips to Mustique in a £200,000 villa – regular shopping excursions to Milan for Ms. Kroupeeva, and Mr. Kroupeev’s extensive collections of wine, watches, and firearms.

Judge Ewins’s judgment underscored Mr. Kroupeev’s consistent disregard for court orders throughout the proceedings, describing his involvement as ‘significantly tainted’ by these breaches. The judge noted a stark contrast in the credibility of the two parties’ testimonies, deeming Ms. Kroupeeva’s evidence ‘coherent and consistent’ while labeling Mr. Kroupeev’s as ‘profoundly unsatisfactory and lacking credibility’.

Evidence presented revealed that despite claiming limited liquid funds, Mr. Kroupeev had spent over £523,000 on his American Express credit card between October 2024 and September 2025, and had also been funding the education of his second family. The judge determined that the £100.6 million settlement was ‘affordable’ for Mr. Kroupeev, representing a manageable fraction of his overall financial resources.

Following the ruling, Ms. Kroupeeva expressed her ‘delight’ through a statement released by her legal representatives at Payne Hicks Beach, describing the outcome as a welcome resolution to a period of ‘troubling insecurity’. The case serves as a notable example of the complexities involved in high-net-worth divorce settlements, particularly when issues of hidden assets and undisclosed family structures come into play. The court’s decision emphasizes the importance of transparency and accountability in financial disclosures during divorce proceedings
