Low-dose glucocorticoid treatment after cataract surgery was associated with a reduced risk for glaucoma in children with longer axial length.

Use of low-dose glucocorticoids after cataract surgery reduces the risk for secondary glaucoma in children with longer axial lengths over 5 years compared with high-dose glucocorticoids.

Participants received treatment with either low-dose or high-dose glucocorticoids after surgery, with a median follow-up period of 40.5 months for the low-dose group and 89 months for the high-dose group.lasting over 3 months after surgery; the secondary outcome was the incidence of opacification of the visual axis.Overall, 21 children were diagnosed with glaucoma or ocular hypertension, with both eyes affected in 13 children.

The risk for glaucoma or ocular hypertension was estimated to be 10% in the high-dose group and 1% in the low-dose group in the first 2 years after surgery.
