San Antonio-based Army North mobilized 1,000 soldiers to go to Asheville, N.C., to help with road clearance, high-water rescues and other recovery efforts.

A San Antonio -based U.S. Army command is mobilizing solders from the 82d Airborne to help communities in North Carolina devastated by Hurricane Helene . U.S. Army North , based at Fort Sam Houston , said Friday it had ordered about 1,000 active-duty troops from the 82nd Airborne Division and the 20th Engineer Brigade to head to the disaster zone from their base at Fort Liberty , N.C. The soldiers will go to Asheville , one of the areas hardest hit by the hurricane.
