Students, staff members, city and state representatives, and others gathered on Wednesday (Dec. 17) to see the ribbon cut to officially open the new Bryden Elementary School building.

Bryden Elementary School and Fairmount Early Childhood Center Principal Michelle Nizen, accompanied by Bryden students, cut the ribbon to officially open the new Bryden building. BEACHWOOD , Ohio -- The ribbon was cut Wednesday to officially open the newly constructed Bryden Elementary School building.

The celebration took place in the school’s gymnasium and brought together students, staff, city officials, state representatives, project partners, and others. Kindergarten, first and second grade students will start in the new building following winter break, on Jan. 8. Preschool students will start in the new building, 25501 Bryden Road, at the beginning of the 2026-27 school year. “It took teamwork, collaboration, attention to detail, and lots of communication to construct this building,” said Superintendent Robert Hardis as he opened the ceremony by welcoming guests. “The Beachwood Board of Education and Beachwood Schools staff members worked with officials from the city of Beachwood and with our team of architects, engineers and construction managers. “The new Bryden has bright classrooms, cozy places to read great books, and special spaces to work in teams, to make music, draw, paint, and of course, to play together.” Board of Education President Megan Walsh thanked everyone who played a key role in making the project a success. “Our community believes deeply in this school district and in the promise of public education,” Walsh said. “This building reflects shared values we hold as a community, that children deserve our very best, that thoughtful investment matters, and that when we work together, we can create something meaningful and lasting.” Beachwood voters, in May of 2023, approved a 3.95-mill bond issue that allowed for the construction of the new Bryden and the yet-to-come Hilltop Elementary school buildings, as well as renovations at the Fairmount Early Childhood Center, at a total cost of $65 million.to pause levying its annual 2.4 charter mills for three years to help offset the tax increase voters would see with passage of the school district’s bond issue. Bryden and Fairmount Early Childhood Center Principal Michelle Nizen noted that the new Bryden building will continue to be a place where students are welcomed, challenged and supported. Additional remarks were shared by Ryan Schmit of ThenDesign Architecture and Bill Schurman of Hammond Construction. Schmit spoke of how grateful he was to have the opportunity to collaborate with many individuals in bringing the project to life, while Schurman encouraged students to bring heart to the new building when they begin classes there. The ceremony concluded with the ribbon cutting led by Nizen and two students from each grade level, followed by a winter sing-a-long concert.
