TWINSBURG, Ohio - On May 5, people in Twinsburg will vote on a 1.25% earned income tax levy for Twinsburg City Schools . Money from the tax would go directly toward funding the district’s operations. The district is asking voters to make the choice — pay a little more, or watch the district make more cuts.
“It is going to generate approximately 12.1 million dollars for district operations. Teachers, buses, food service, all the operations of the district,” said Steve Marlow, Twinsburg interim superintendent. The district said it has been in deficit spending for years. This year, the school board approved $2 million in cuts — most of it from staffing. But Marlow said that’s not a long-term fix. “We have reduced our expenses by two million dollars this coming year. The board has approved a two million dollar reduction and reductions alone cannot solve our problem, so we are looking at a different way of funding,” Marlow said.“This applies to earned income. It does not apply to social security income, it doesn’t apply to pensions. It only applies to earned income for those residents in the school district,” Marlow said. If the levy is passed, a person who makes $60,000 a year and lives in Twinsburg would pay 1.25% of their income in tax, equaling $750 a year to the school district. “I think that we also receive less funding from state, so I think that we are a district that has to rely locally on ourselves and take care of ourselves from a revenue standpoint,” Marlow said.Inmate dies after suicide attempt at the Summit County JailHearing for Cleveland mother accused of killing daughters, burying them in suitcases Kindergarten teacher accused of grooming, sexually abusing teen for years, lawsuit saysNorth Ridgeville considers adding beer to summer concert series
