ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Numerous school districts across Southcentral Alaska, including in Anchorage, the Kenai Peninsula, and the Mat-Su, closed their doors on Friday due to ongoing weather conditions that have created hazardous and icy roads.
Friday’s closure marks the third time the Anchorage School District has canceled school this academic year. “It is frustrating, but I do really understand why the district closed,” Irene Boll, an ASD parent, said. “The road conditions are really bad.”ASD announced that it would keep schools closed on Friday in a notice released to families. The district said the decision was made after communicating with the National Weather Service, the Department of Transportation, and Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, which forecast that driving conditions would be unsafe on Friday morning and throughout school hours. “First of all, I was actually relieved that they told us the night before, instead of like 5:30 a.m.,” Candace Mosteller, another ASD parent, said. “The timing I thought was better than last minute in the morning time when you’re scrambling, right? And then second of all, I said to myself, well the roads must really going to be bad because they would know better than I do.” But not all Anchorage parents agreed. Kate Sebring is a parent to a preschooler in Anchorage. She said her student’s preschool follows the district’s closure and scheduling policies. “I feel like we live in Alaska. The weather is nothing new, and ... it just baffles me that parents aren’t more prepared,” Sebring said. “And that the school district wouldn’t be more prepared for the weather that we encounter.” Although Boll understands why the district chose to cancel school on Friday, she said that as a single mom, she feels the impact of school closures. “It means time off of work,” Boll said. “It means using up all of your PTO so that you can stay home and care for your children that can’t be home by themselves.”. District spokesperson Corey Young told Alaska’s News Source this week that the district had used all its allotted emergency closure days for the school year. With Friday’s cancellation, Young told Alaska’s News Source that April 17 will be the likely make-up day. If additional make-up days are needed, according to the ASD school calendar, May 21 and 22 will be the following days used. The Mat-Su Borough School District is also closing on Friday for all schools except for Glacier View School in .
