New road layout on Sarnoff Drive in Eastside Tucson leads to concern and confusion for local residents and business owners due to changes involving bike lanes and parking configurations.
Recent modifications along a segment of Sarnoff Drive , situated between Broadway and Kenyon Drive, have ignited a wave of frustration and perplexity among residents and business owners in Eastside. The implemented changes, which feature flexible white pylon cones and a revamped arrangement of parking zones and bicycle lanes, have prompted widespread concerns regarding the practicality and necessity of the new road layout.
For Debi Browne, the proprietor of Dairy Queen on Sarnoff for over half a century, the modifications present both a puzzle and an unnecessary complication. She articulates her confusion regarding the white poles, stating that they seem to have been placed to obstruct parking in front of businesses, despite the absence of any history of vehicles parking in the middle of the road, a situation she finds wholly unwarranted. Browne worries that the placement of these pylons in front of her establishment could cause traffic to extend onto Sarnoff, especially when there is a queue of customers waiting to collect their ice cream orders. She underlines the significant investment made to operate the business at this particular corner, emphasizing the crucial need for designated space for her clientele. Browne foresees significant traffic backups and potential chaos as customers will have to wait in a single lane directly from the intersection. She mentioned her attendance in meetings concerning these changes, but feels as though community input has not been taken into serious consideration. She maintains that while she supports safe bicycle infrastructure, she believes the city has overly complicated a matter that could have been addressed with a simpler approach, such as painting a bike path next to the parking area, demarcated by a simple white line, which would have ensured safety for all involved. Beau Borboa, a lifelong Tucson resident and a contractor by profession, voices comparable sentiments of dissatisfaction. While Borboa asserts that he is not opposed to infrastructural enhancements, he questions whether the city's vision aligns with the actual needs of the neighborhood. He stresses the importance of community input, particularly highlighting the frequent disconnect between such feedback and the city's preconceived objectives, which he believes results in a significant communication gap. Ward 2 Council Member Paul Cunningham states that these modifications were designed using best practices in traffic engineering and are geared towards augmenting safety, particularly for cyclists. Cunningham explains that the parked cars are intended to act as a protective barrier between traffic and the bicycle lanes, thus making the bike path a safer place. He acknowledges that the new layout may appear unusual and may not be familiar to residents, but he believes that it will calm traffic and ensure a smoother ride. Cunningham acknowledges the existing confusion and assures that his office has given serious consideration to the feedback received. He mentioned that after receiving complaints and queries, his office has since installed additional signage. Borboa remarks that the need to explain the design suggests a flawed plan. Cunningham urges residents to be patient and give the new layout a chance, emphasizing that it was designed following the best engineering practices. Browne acknowledges Cunningham's responsiveness but also expresses concerns that the community may not feel fully represented. Cunningham, however, maintains that the current road configuration will provide cyclists with a smoother riding experience. He expresses pride in the project and happiness over the repaving of Sarnoff Drive. As for what’s next, Cunningham states that traffic engineers are actively assessing the new construction for any potential flaws, and any necessary changes will be implemented promptly. However, no timeline has been provided. Cunningham also noted that his office has received some positive feedback regarding the new construction, and contact information for his office has been made available
