A wildfire burning near the Florida-Georgia line remains active but is holding steady in size and containment, according to an evening update from forestry officials. The Sargent Fire is estimated at about 2,712 acres and is 50% contained, with crews continuing to strengthen containment lines and mop up hot spots.Officials said trace rainfall has fallen in parts of the fire area and light rain remains in the forecast. While that moisture could help reduce fire activity, forestry officials cautioned it won’t be enough to extinguish the fire. Crews worked through the day using heavy and medium dozers to build and reinforce containment lines—especially on the western side of the fire—and to continue mop-up operations near the perimeter.Smoke will continue to impact nearby communities, officials said.Officials said Georgia Highway 94 / Florida Highway 2 is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. but will have overnight closures due to reduced visibility from smoke and fog.Forecasters say winds could test containment lines along the southwest edge of the fire if rainfall remains limited. The fire initially was reported at roughly 4,000 acres before more accurate mapping put it closer to 2,700 acres, and officials reported it was 50% contained as of Thursday evening.Richard Ochoa is Manager of Content and Coverage at WJXT, where he leads multi‑platform strategy, elevates visual storytelling, and mentors journalists to deliver audience‑first coverage for Jacksonville and all of Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.Jacksonville family honors Kenance “Tiger” Bronson with Easter giveawayJacksonville Beach wedding becomes viral moment during ‘Senior Skip Day’St. Johns County’s LAMP program sets sights on 5 properties after missing last year’s top priorityLocal businesses anticipate impacts from Pearl Street Square developmentReady for some fun at the Clay County Fair?Florida’s SAVE Act to change voter registration rule4 kindergarten students hurt, semi smashes back of school bus crossing train tracks on Zoo ParkwayTeal Tower: Thousands of old EverBank Stadium seats ready to be recycledVisitors relive Moon-mission memories as Artemis II lights up the sky | 'Sends chills through me'A St. Johns County mother’s push for ‘Trenton’s Law’ gains attention after Tiger Woods DUI arrestJaguars, Orlando officials unveil team's 2027 temporary homeramps at First Coast Expressway, SR 16 interchange officially open ahead of Clay County FairRead full article: Firefighters battling 2,700-acre wildfire burning near Florida-Georgia line
