CLEVELAND , Ohio - As summer approaches and car enthusiasts gather for ‘ car meet s’, there’s a fine line separates showcasing rides and reckless driving. 19 Investigates exposes the dangers of illegal stunts at these events, with exclusive footage from a recent incident on Cleveland ’s East Side.
The video, captured on Sunday, April 29th, shows a prime example of how car meets can quickly turn dangerous. At an intersection of Saint Clair and Cornado Avenue around 2:00 am, an SUV spins in circles, ultimately colliding with a car parked at a stop sign. The shocking footage takes a further turn as the driver of the SUV exits the vehicle, brandishes a gun, and approaches the car he hit.Police arrived at the scene around 3:00 am after receiving reports of fights and burnouts.“The vehicles quickly dispersed obviously they knew they were doing something wrong,” said Sergeant Freddy Diaz of the Cleveland Division of Police. Sergeant Diaz emphasized the potential dangers of these gatherings. “All across the country, we’ve seen these incidents turn into violence or where someone could be injured,” he added. Similar issues have plagued nearby cities. In Pittsburgh, reports of violence at car meets have surfaced, while Grand Rapids saw a shooting incident. Additionally, an officer in Springfield, Virginia, was injured after being struck by a car during one such event.Last month, Akron police announced a crackdown on “car takeovers,” resulting in three arrests and several citations. Sergeant Diaz addressed concerns about the summer months potentially leading to an increase in these incidents. “There’s always a concern to make sure people abide by the laws, speeding, running lights, drinking and driving,” he said. “So, as it gets warmer, the message we want to get out is that people let us know and notify us of these situations.” While nobody sustained injuries in the caught-on-camera encounter in Cleveland, the armed individual remains unidentified and at large.
