Geely's new facility boasts several world-first benchmarks, including an adaptable climate wind tunnel and a flexible crash test zone.

Located in the eastern Chinese city of Ningbo, Geely ’s newly established Safety Centre is designed to carry out 27 different categories of testing, covering a wide range of vehicle safety and reliability requirements.

According to Li Chuanhai, vice president of Geely Auto, the facility is a strategic investment that strengthens the company’s ambition to set global benchmarks in safety standards, particularly for next-gen technologies in intelligent and electrified vehicles. The centre comes at a time when consumer expectations are increasingly shaped by concerns over battery safety and the dependability of intelligent systems, including advanced driver assistance systems . By expanding its in-house testing capabilities, Geely aims to address these priorities directly, supporting higher levels of quality assurance as regulatory scrutiny and market competition intensify worldwide.Geely’s push for “Comprehensive Safety 2.0”Spanning 45,000 square metres, Geely’s new safety facility looks to move beyond conventional crash protection and include testing in areas such as cybersecurity, data privacy, and occupant health. These expanded capabilities are aligned with Geely’s “Comprehensive Safety 2.0” framework, which sets out an ambitious vision of zero casualties, zero health risks, zero property damage, and zero privacy breaches across its vehicle platforms. To showcase the centre’s technical scope, Geely staged a live crash test involving two Lynk & Co 900 models during the opening ceremony. The site houses a range of specialised laboratories, including facilities for assisted driving simulation and validation, pedestrian protection assessment, and vehicle network and information security testing.Geely says its Safety Centre has established a series of world-first benchmarks, underscoring the scale and technical ambition of the project. The facility includes what is described as the world’s largest automotive safety laboratory, as well as the longest indoor crash test track currently in operation. It also houses the most extensive altitude- and climate-adjustable wind tunnel dedicated to vehicle testing, alongside a uniquely flexible crash test zone capable of simulating impacts from virtually any angle.Overseas growth puts Chinese carmakers under tougher regulatory spotlightAs Chinese automakers accelerate their expansion into overseas markets, they are likely to face a broader and more complex range of regulatory scrutiny. High-profile safety incidents and the tightening of national regulations at home have contributed to greater consumer awareness around vehicle safety, increasingly shaping purchasing decisions and influencing the direction of the industry’s development, according to Geely executives. Thus, heightened regulatory attention in China is reshaping how battery-powered vehicles are monitored, with authorities stepping up oversight and prompting a wave of recalls among domestic manufacturers this year. The stricter approach has translated into faster intervention when safety risks are identified, particularly in software-driven vehicle systems. In one notable case, Xiaomi addressed a safety issue in its advanced driver assistance system through a remote software update in September, following a regulatory probe. BYD has also been affected by the tougher stance, issuing recalls covering more than two hundred thousand vehicles, including several thousand plug-in hybrid off-road SUVs, after regulators identified safety-related defects.
