Artist Ruth Lauer, an avid enthusiast of swimming pools, found inspiration for her latest solo exhibition while enjoying the simple pleasure of floating in the water. Her artistic journey began with a moment of serene observation at a public pool. Gazing through the blurry lens of her water-filled glasses, she recognized a captivating composition of colors and shapes, sparking an internal question: Could she recreate this on canvas? The answer, as it turned out, was a resounding yes. This initial pool painting marked the beginning of a dedicated exploration of this theme, leading Lauer to create an entire series of works inspired by Austin's beloved swimming pools. The resulting exhibition, entitled 'Get Wet!', is a testament to the artist's fascination with these aquatic spaces. Lauer reflects on what draws her to pools, stating, After the initial couple of paintings I just started thinking about what is it about pools that makes us so relaxed, so friendly. We get along, there's all different people there and I started thinking more about that and how swimming pool can bring community together. Her creative process delves into the communal aspects of the pool, highlighting how it fosters a sense of unity and shared experience. She continues, I think that our community swimming pools in Austin are a great asset and they're somewhat underutilized, and as an enthusiast, I'm worried that there's been problems with funding of these kinds of things in other communities around Texas. We really need more fun nowadays and I think swimming pools are just a great way to have fun and I tried to incorporate that into this exhibit. Lauer views the exhibition not merely as a series of paintings but as a gentle nudge to the audience, a reminder to seek joy and connection in the tangible world, particularly in these challenging times. Lauer hopes her art serves as a counterpoint to the intensity of modern life. I think that everything's so serious and intense and we're doing all this doom scrolling, she says, and there's just nothing better than being in water, having gravity release its grip on us, and just being friendly with other people. And I hope that my art captures some of those moments. I've talked to a lot of people who also enjoy going to swimming pools and they're like, yeah, there's something about being in your most basic clothing, with no status symbols around that make us all equal. 'Get Wet!' isn't just a visual delight; it's a message of hope and communal unity. The exhibit underscores the importance of disconnecting from the digital world and embracing the simple pleasures of human connection. The exhibition 'Get Wet!' will be on display at the Link & Pin Art Space from April 23rd to May 17th, with an opening reception on Saturday, April 25th, and an artist talk scheduled for Sunday, May 3rd, providing opportunities for art enthusiasts to engage with Lauer's work and learn more about her creative process. Mike, the production director at KUT, produces and hosts Arts Eclectic, among other programs, and plays a crucial role in bringing these stories of artistic expression to the community
