NORTH RIDGEVILLE, Ohio - Construction is underway on a new Circle K gas station at Root and Lorain Roads, months after the North Ridgeville City Council approved the project.
According to the North Ridgeville City Council website, Circle K moving into the area was approved last May on a 5-0 vote. Many people in North Ridgeville voiced concerns to the planning commission about traffic safety and contamination to a nearby creek.
“When it rains it really washes out,” said James Barta, pastor at Faith Baptist Temple, located across the street from the project. Now that work is starting, he said he is hearing some of the old concerns resurface, with mixed responses appearing on social media.
“People that I know in the community that are members here, it’s just a matter of it’s changing, most of these people came out here cause it’s rural, it’s slow, they don’t have a lot of traffic, but now we’re going to have a lot more traffic,” Barta said. Last year, the city addressed concerns in the meeting, offering solutions like truck routes to help combat traffic issues.
Barta said he understands some are apprehensive about the changes but sees it as an opportunity.
“More traffic is not bad, we can witness to them in a stronger way, so we’ve kind of been off and on about it, we kind of like more people coming down here,” Barta said. North Ridgeville Mayor Kevin Corcoran offered more details on how to help with traffic going forward. As approved, the project includes dedication of right-of-way along both road frontages to allow for potential future widening and a possible roundabout at the intersection.
The Root Road driveway is restricted to right-in, right-out only and located farther from the intersection to reduce conflict points, while the Lorain Road driveway is full access but may be converted to right-in, right-out if safety concerns arise or if a future roundabout is built. The city also established a crash-based trigger for requiring additional changes if safety thresholds are met, along with required roadway marking and turn lane improvements to better manage traffic flow.
