Expert curious to see plan to phase out artificial dyes

The Food and Drug Administration recently banned Red Dye #3 at the beginning of the year, something shown to cause cancer in lab rats.

) - U.S. health officials announced a commitment to phase out artificial dyes from our nation’s food supply. It’s a move countries around the world have had in place for years. Now they hope to get rid of the eight other petroleum-based artificial colors currently in your food.

“It’s not really a political issue, a partisan issue.,” said Brian Ronholm. “This is a human issue... You’re seeing the safer, less toxic versions of food products being made oversees while the inferior, more harmful ones stay in the US.” Brian Ronholm is Consumer Reports’ food policy director. He points to some reports that show artificial food dyes are linked to some health issues. “There are studies and data points that suggest that exposure to these synthetic food dyes leads to neurobehavioral effects in some children,” he explained. “So when you think of hyperactivity, attention-deficit, some children -- it’s linked to the consumption of these synthetic food dyes.” Though HHS and the FDA are making a commitment to banning them, Ronholm wants to see the actual plan. “Unfortunately, yesterday’s announcement served more as a pep rally than anything else so it’s not really clear what kind of concrete steps they’re going to be able to take to remove these dyes,” he said. Though a step-by-step plan is not yet announced, leaders want to eliminate the synthetic dyes by the end of 2026. “They can certainly announce their intent to work on important policy issues, but if they’re also making significant and destructive cuts to the budgets of these agencies and also cutting back on personnel, there really isn’t going to be any staffing or infrastructure to work on these issues in any meaningful way and that’s further going to hinder their ability to move forward,” said Ronholm. As we wait for a formal plan on a national level, Ronholm said states could go ahead and take action.‘I’m not happy about it’: Less than $1K paid in restitution to Hoover Police after infamous kidnapping hoax, leaving chief frustratedFamily of man killed by Montgomery police dog appeals federal court ruling dismissing lawsuit against cityHeart of Alabama Food Bank announces 3 new programs to help thousands of residentsALDOT marks National Work Zone Awareness WeekSuspect charged with capital murder in March shooting death of Montgomery man
