Samsung SDI unveils solid-state battery prototype designed to power humanoid robots and physical AI systems.

Samsung SDI said it will showcase a new pouch-type all- solid-state battery designed for emerging physical AI systems such as humanoid robots . The battery will be publicly displayed for the first time at the InterBattery 2026 exhibition in Seoul, which runs from March 11 to March 13.

The company plans to present the prototype as part of a broader portfolio of battery technologies aimed at supporting the rapidly growing AI infrastructure sector. These include batteries for energy storage systems, data center backup, and high-power applications.Samsung SDI said the solid-state battery is being developed with robotics and other compact systems in mind, where batteries must deliver high energy density while fitting into tight spaces.Robots in particular create engineering challenges for battery designers. Their movements generate sudden spikes in power demand, requiring batteries that can deliver high output quickly while maintaining safety and reliability.Built for physical AIThe prototype marks the company’s first public display of a pouch-type all-solid-state battery sample aimed at physical AI platforms. These include humanoid robots, aviation systems, robotics platforms, and next-generation wearable devices.Traditional lithium-ion batteries rely on liquid electrolytes, which can pose safety risks and limit energy density. Solid-state batteries replace the liquid component with solid materials, allowing for higher safety, improved energy density, and more compact designs.Samsung SDI said it is adapting the battery’s form factor to suit applications that require lightweight components and flexible integration. The pouch structure is designed to support smaller devices while delivering strong power output. The company previously focused on prismatic solid-state batteries mainly for electric vehicles. The new pouch design signals a push to expand the technology to other industries that rely on compact, high-performance energy systems.Power backbone for AIBeyond robotics batteries, the company will also present several technologies designed for AI infrastructure. One key highlight is a high-power battery developed for uninterruptible power supply systems used in data centers. At the exhibition, Samsung SDI will showcase its U8A1 battery for UPS applications. The battery uses a prismatic design combined with lithium manganese oxide chemistry to provide high power output and improved safety.According to the company, the system improves space efficiency by about 33 percent compared with earlier solutions, enabling stable and rapid power delivery with fewer battery units. The battery can also help stabilize electricity supply during sudden spikes in AI-related computing demand.Samsung SDI will also introduce a battery backup unit solution designed for servers in data centers. These units provide immediate backup power during outages to prevent data loss and maintain operations.“Our goal is to demonstrate how SAMSUNG SDI’s battery technology transforms the full potential of the AI era into reality,” a company official said.“Built on decades of accumulated expertise, we will present premium battery solutions tailored to the evolving demands of AI-driven industries.”The company said it aims to bring its all-solid-state battery technology to mass production in the second half of next year.
