Alabama has reached a $12.2 million settlement with Roblox and secured an injunction forcing the online gaming platform to implement safety reforms designed to prevent adults from communicating with children under 16, Attorney General Steve Marshall announced Tuesday.

) - Alabama has reached a $12.2 million settlement with Roblox and secured an injunction forcing the online gaming platform to implement safety reforms designed to prevent adults from communicating with children under 16, Attorney General Steve Marshall announced Tuesday, April 21.

The settlement requires Roblox to implement new age verification procedures using government ID or facial recognition before users can access the chat feature. The platform will ban chats between adult users and users under 16 without express permission from parents. Chats between minor users will not be encrypted. Roblox has created a default game and content mode for users under 16 or who have unverified age.

Only parents can change that setting. By July 1, parents will have a way to manage accounts for kids under 16 and visibility for teen accounts. A Dale County mother, who wants to remain anonymous, said what started as an innocent gaming distraction for her 8-year-old daughter in 2020 quickly turned into a nightmare involving online predators and sexual exploitation.

“I thought it was very innocent. I thought other kids were on there and that was a way for her to socialize,”“And at the time, she was the only child. And I’ve been a single mom and, you know, raising her. So that was kind of like her outlet and to be able to socialize with other kids.

” The mother discovered the extent of the danger when she overheard her daughter talking to someone on the phone.

“I came home and I heard her having a conversation. I’m like, ‘who is she on the phone with? ’” the mother said.

“And I bust through the door and snatched the phone from her and I’m like, ‘whoever this is, I know you’re an adult, do you know you’re speaking with a 12-year-old child? ’”According to the lawsuit, the girl met the man in a Roblox game, and their conversations moved to the Discord messaging platform, where they turned sexual.

The lawsuit alleges that this man and several others groomed the girl on Roblox and convinced the 12-year-old to send inappropriate pictures in exchange for Robux, the game’s virtual currency. Brett Turnbull, one of the attorneys representing Alabama families suing Roblox, said the biggest issue is lack of oversight.

“You know, it’s very, very disturbing. Biggest issue that I see is there’s just no oversight. None at all,” Turnbull said in December. Turnbull said the lawsuits claim adults can easily sign up as children and interact with minors in children-only zones without proper verification.

Another Dale County family sued Roblox and Discord in September, alleging their now 14-year-old daughter met a user on Roblox when she was 11 who claimed to be 15, but was actually a man targeting the young girl for exploitation. The lawsuit claims the man manipulated the girl into sending him sexually explicit images through Discord.

A second suit filed in September alleges another girl from Dale County, now 12, met multiple sexual predators on Roblox who convinced her to send them sexually explicit images of herself through Discord in exchange for the promise of Robux.

“You would think as a parent with any common sense that a publicly traded corporation telling you that this platform is meant for children 6 and older, that this is going to be safe,” said Matthew Dolman, an attorney representing both girls and their families. “What you don’t know is that adults are talking to children and there’s no moderation. There’s no one blowing the whistle. There’s no one keeping the adults segregated from the children.

”Marshall said some of the changes are already in place, while others will roll out between May 1 and Sept. 1. The $12.2 million will be used by the attorney general’s office in a safe schools fund to pay for school resource officers across the state. Part of the settlement includes requirements for Roblox to help train law enforcement officers in Alabama and provide a liaison for parents and law enforcement.

Roblox said in a statement in December that safety is a top priority and the company has implemented over 100 new safety features this year.

“We are deeply troubled by any incident that endangers our users,” the company said. “While we cannot comment on claims raised in litigation, we always strive to hold ourselves to the highest safety standards. ”‘We lost half of our family for nothing’: MCSO investigating quadruple homicide in WilmerTomato prices hit 8-year high, costing Huntsville pizza restaurant thousandsAlma Bryant coach fights insurance limits as husband recovers from traumatic brain injury
