The family member of a former ARC of Montgomery resident is speaking out after the organization abruptly shut down- relocating all of its residents without warning.

Robin Litaker ’s sister, Susan, has lived at ARC of Montgomery’s Handicapped Environmental Living Program on Milton Road for around 30 years. On May 5, Litaker, who lives in Birmingham, received a phone call from a former employee of the facility who told her she needed to get to Montgomery- fast.

“I drove down as quick as I could,” Litaker said. “And I am not exaggerating, that’s one of the worst things I’ve ever seen in my entire life. ”“Nobody told the residents what was going on,” Litaker said.

“Nobody informed anyone that they were being moved. They packed them all up in garbage bags, plastic yard garbage bags, and started taping Their names on it. My sister didn’t even have her correct name on her bags. ” The residents at ARC of Montgomery facilities have physical or mental disabilities.

Susan Litaker has cerebral palsy.

“When she saw me, she just burst into tears,” Litaker said. “She had no idea what these people were doing, and she wasn’t the only one. ” Susan was separated from the other residents, who Litaker says had become family to her. She was relocated to a facility in Birmingham.

As of May 15th, she still does not have all of her belongings.

“The second night she was at her home, her new home, she was sent to the hospital because they didn’t send the swallowing agent she needed, and she almost choked,” Litaker said. “Every day when I go in to see her, when I get ready to leave, she looks at me, and she says, when am I going home? ” Litaker said.

“And it just breaks my heart, and she starts crying, and she doesn’t understand because she was jerked away from her home of 30 years. ” Litaker says as of May 15, none of the caretakers of the former ARC of Montgomery’s Milton Road location have been contacted by anyone in an official capacity to let them know their loved one has been relocated.

“We all found out by word of mouth,” Litaker said. “We didn’t find out from any official, you know, anybody in any official capacity. ” Litaker says families are now left demanding answers about why residents were moved so suddenly- with no warning.
