Tancredo Bankhardt, 41, is on trial for allegedly attempting to murder three children by driving his car into oncoming traffic. The prosecution claims he intentionally caused a collision, failing to secure seatbelts for the children, while in a state of emotional distress. No fatalities occurred, but several people were injured.
A 41-year-old man, Tancredo Bankhardt , is on trial at Norwich Crown Court accused of attempting to murder three children by deliberately driving into oncoming traffic.
The prosecution alleges that on September 26th of last year, Bankhardt intentionally caused a serious collision on the A146 road between Loddon and Hales in Norfolk, with the intent to end his own life and the lives of the three children he was transporting. Crucially, the court heard that Bankhardt did not secure seatbelts for the children, placing them on top of the buckles instead, effectively rendering them useless.
The resulting collision involved multiple vehicles and resulted in serious injuries to several people, including two of the children. However, thankfully, no fatalities occurred. The prosecution contends that Bankhardt’s actions were not accidental, but a deliberate attempt to cause a fatal crash, driven by a state of heightened emotion. The defense is expected to argue that the incident was a tragic accident, attributing the collision to a combination of emotional distress and the glare of oncoming headlights.
The prosecution detailed how Bankhardt had sent audio messages suggesting suicidal ideation and seeking forgiveness prior to the crash, including a message stating, 'I hope God doesn't treat me badly up there… See you in the next life.
' A recipient of one such message described Bankhardt as 'tearful and depressed,' claiming he stated he was 'doing all this for the best. ' Following this message, police were alerted. Bankhardt then spent approximately two hours driving up and down the A146, repeatedly circling roundabouts. During this period, he engaged in further calls, appearing increasingly distressed and sobbing, claiming he was driving to 'clear his head.
' A call with his brother was interrupted by a 'loud bang' at 8:33 pm, coinciding with the collision. The prosecution emphasized the stark choice facing the jury: was this a deliberate act of attempted murder, or a tragic accident? They will be presented with eyewitness accounts and dashcam footage to aid in their deliberation. The court will also consider the circumstances of Bankhardt’s life leading up to the incident.
The trial is expected to last at least two weeks, with the prosecution presenting evidence to demonstrate Bankhardt’s intent. The prosecution highlighted the deliberate nature of the actions, pointing to the unsecured seatbelts as a key indicator of his intent to cause harm. They argued that Bankhardt’s actions went beyond simply wanting to cause injury, suggesting he intended a collision from which no one would survive.
The defense is anticipated to challenge this narrative, presenting an alternative explanation centered around emotional turmoil and accidental circumstances. The jury will be tasked with determining whether Bankhardt’s actions constituted a deliberate attempt to kill, or a desperate act resulting in a tragic, unintended outcome. The charges against Bankhardt include three counts of attempted murder relating to the children and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
The case hinges on the interpretation of Bankhardt’s actions and the evidence presented regarding his state of mind and the circumstances surrounding the collision. The court will need to establish beyond a reasonable doubt whether Bankhardt possessed the necessary intent to commit the crimes he is accused of
