Richmond Heights is repairing sidewalks for elderly and disabled residents for free.

Kathy Gamber has lived on Chardon Road in Richmond Heights for 40 years. She loves walking her neighborhood. But for years, uneven sidewalks made that dangerous.

“I did actually fall once, tripped on a sidewalk that wasn’t level,” said Gamber, a Richmond Heights resident. Gamber is 74 years old. She said broken sidewalks don’t just affect her, they affect everyone in her community.

“Walking on Chardon Road and the sidewalks for those who are walking with canes or even those who are in a wheelchair, it makes it very difficult when the sidewalks are not level. And it’s also dangerous,” Gamber said. Richmond Heights is taking action. The city launched the new sidewalk repair program this year after months of development.

The city set aside $150,000 from its budget for this pilot program. 22 people have already signed up, and the city is still accepting applications on a rolling basis. Director of Economic and Community Development Chelsey Kovar said the city knows exactly who it is trying to help.

“We know that seniors are our largest population in Richmond Heights and also in Cuyahoga County, and we just really want to be able to support them,” Kovar said. Kovar said most cities cite homeowners and make them pay for repairs themselves. Richmond Heights is taking a different approach.

“This is actually kind of an anomaly for cities to do. With us, we felt like it was a joint endeavor and we really wanted to help seniors and our residents with disabilities specifically to help support their sidewalks,” Kovar said. For Gamber, this program is personal. She has followed every update.

And she is already in the first queue for repairs.

“As a resident, I feel it is probably one of the best things that we have done — not only for all the residents and children, but also the seniors. So we’re so excited about this program,” Gamber said. Once approved, repairs are expected to begin within 60 to 90 days, depending on contractor schedules and weather.
