The Cincinnati Reds are neither buyers nor sellers at the upcoming MLB Trade Deadline, but that doesn't mean the front office should shy away from making deals.

Cincinnati Reds ' Jonathan India reacts as he rounds the bases after hitting a solo home run during the first inning of a baseball game against the Miami Marlins, Friday, July 12, 2024, in Cincinnati. CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Reds are neither buyers nor sellers at the upcoming MLB Trade Deadline, but that doesn't mean the front office should shy away from making deals to improve the team both this season and moving forward.

Opinions surrounding the future of 27-year-old Jonathan India are as divisive as any player, as the second baseman remains the “heart and soul” of the Reds while enjoying a resurgent season. He has looked more like the player who was the 2021 NL Rookie of the Year than the oft-injured infielder from the past two seasons.

The Yankees are in the market for a bat – especially to replace struggling infielders Gleyber Torres and DJ LeMahieu – and a reliever that can also close games. Yes, India is under control for a relatively low price . Yet there are options to replace him. McLain not only returns, but Steer can play second base, and one of the team’s top prospects in infielder Edwin Arroyo could be ready for a reserve roster spot next season, too.

While the upside is high for this group of prospects, they are not proven MLB players and the Reds are ready to win now. Rooker would be a right-handed power bat in the outfield, something sorely missing. While Rece Hinds had a nice week-long run in his MLB debut, Rooker is a former All-Star and under team control until 2028, though arbitration-eligible next year. Rooker, 29, would feast in Great American Ball Park, having hit 30 homers last season and approaching that number this year.
