A new Reuters/Ipsos survey shows that a significant portion of Americans, including some Republicans, are expressing concerns about President Trump's temperament and mental health amid conflicts with Iran and a public clash with the Pope.
A recent Reuters/Ipsos public opinion survey reveals that American citizens are deeply divided and increasingly anxious regarding the presidential temperament of Donald Trump . This scrutiny arrives during a volatile period defined by the ongoing military conflict with Iran and a highly publicized, unprecedented diplomatic spat with Pope Leo XIV.
The data suggests that even within the base of the Republican Party, there is a palpable unease regarding the President’s recent behavioral patterns and perceived mental acuity. While the President has maintained a loyal following, the polling indicates that a significant plurality of the electorate is questioning his executive stability in the face of mounting geopolitical pressures and internal social media volatility. According to the numbers, only 26 percent of the general population characterizes President Trump as even-tempered. The internal dynamics of the Republican Party are particularly telling; while 53 percent of GOP supporters defend his temperament, a significant 46 percent admitted that he lacks the necessary composure, highlighting a rare fracture in party cohesion. In contrast, the Democratic Party shows near-universal skepticism, with only 7 percent viewing the President as steady. The survey further probed the public perception of cognitive health, revealing that 51 percent of all Americans believe his mental sharpness has deteriorated over the past year. This includes 14 percent of Republicans, over half of all independents, and an overwhelming 85 percent of Democrats who express concern over his current state of mind. These concerns were amplified by a series of aggressive social media posts where the President threatened to dismantle Iranian infrastructure, including power plants and bridges, while simultaneously launching scathing personal attacks against Pope Leo XIV. The President labeled the pontiff as weak on crime and misguided regarding international policy following the Pope’s public criticism of the Iran conflict. These outbursts have seemingly impacted his personal favorability ratings, which currently sit at 36 percent, significantly lower than the 60 percent favorability rating enjoyed by Pope Leo XIV. As the conflict with Iran continues to contribute to inflationary pressures and rising gas prices, only 36 percent of the public approves of the ongoing military strikes. With a sample size of 4,557 adults, the poll underscores a nation grappling with both the physical toll of a foreign war and the psychological stability of its leadership during a high-stakes tenure that began in early 2025
