Pope Francis said Wednesday the deaths of many migrants can be prevented by compassion.
HOLD FOR STORY FILE - Pope Francis arrives for his weekly general audience in St. Peter's Square, at the Vatican, Wednesday, June 5, 2024. The pope’s address came during his General Audience, which is often attended by pilgrims from around the world. He described a desire to “dwell on this drama, this pain” experienced by migrants forced to endure extreme situations.
The deaths of many migrants, Pope Francis said, can be prevented by compassion. For this reason, the pope instructed, people must not turn away migrants. “Brothers and sisters, we can all agree on one thing: migrants should not be in those seas and in those lethal deserts,” he added. “But it is not through more restrictive laws, it is not with the militarization of borders, it is not with rejection that we will obtain this result.”Pope Francis has been an outspoken critic of efforts to limit migration throughout the world. He described efforts to close the U.S. southern border as “madness” during a 60 Minutes interview in May.
