RedMagic 11 Air: Challenging the Norms of Gaming Smartphones

A comprehensive review of the RedMagic 11 Air, exploring its thin design, massive battery, and high-performance gaming features.

The RedMagic 11 Air enters the market as a disruptive force in the niche world of gaming smartphones. Traditionally, devices tailored for gamers have been characterized by their bulk, often resembling thick, dense slabs of technology designed to accommodate massive cooling systems and oversized batteries.

However, the RedMagic 11 Air pivots away from this trend, sporting a remarkably slim profile of just 7.85mm. This design choice is a direct response to the industry-wide movement toward thinner phones, but RedMagic has attempted to do so without the usual sacrifices. Despite its lean chassis, the device manages to house a staggering 7,000 mAh battery, an internal cooling fan, and a high-end chipset, all while maintaining a price point of 499 dollars.

This creates a compelling value proposition for users who want peak performance without the cumbersome weight of a traditional gaming brick. From a build perspective, the RedMagic 11 Air is constructed with a high-quality aluminum alloy frame and utilizes Corning Gorilla Glass 7i for the front panel. The rear features a transparent Gorilla Glass 5 panel, which allows users to catch a glimpse of the inner workings of the machine.

While it carries an IP54 rating for dust and splash resistance, it falls short of the full submersion capabilities found in flagship devices from other brands. The aesthetic is unmistakably gaming-centric, featuring a decorative plate that showcases simplified thermal components and a customizable RGB ring that encircles the internal cooling fan. While some might find the look a bit gaudy, it remains relatively reserved compared to previous iterations.

A notable change in this model is the absence of the physical side slider found on other RedMagic phones. In its place is a signature red button dedicated to activating the Game Space.

Additionally, the camera module is completely flush with the back panel, eliminating the common wobble when the phone is placed on a flat surface and ensuring a more comfortable grip during long landscape gaming sessions. The display is perhaps the most impressive aspect of the hardware. It features a 6.85-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2688 x 1216, resulting in a crisp 431 pixels per inch.

The screen supports a refresh rate of up to 144Hz, providing the fluid motion necessary for competitive gaming. With a peak brightness of 1,800 nits, the display is vivid and clear, although it may struggle slightly under direct, intense sunlight compared to some rivals that reach 3,000 nits. One of the standout features is the completely uninterrupted screen. By placing the front-facing camera under the display, RedMagic has eliminated the notch or hole-punch cutout, providing a true full-screen experience.

While the quality of the under-display camera is not particularly high, the trade-off is worth it for those who prioritize an immersive visual experience. In terms of functionality, the device includes touch-sensitive areas on the right edge that act as shoulder triggers, allowing gamers to map controls for a more console-like experience. The phone is available in colors like Black Phantom and White Prism, with the Black Phantom version offering a stealthy look accented by red branding.

Despite the slimness, the inclusion of an active cooling fan suggests that RedMagic is serious about thermal management, aiming to prevent the throttling that often plagues thin high-performance devices. Ultimately, the RedMagic 11 Air represents a clever piece of engineering that seeks to find the sweet spot between portability and power. It proves that a gaming phone does not have to be an oversized slab to deliver the performance and endurance that enthusiasts crave
