Geauga Park District's archery programs continue throughout the winter at The Rookery's Great Blue Heron Lodge. Introductory sessions are available for families and different age groups. Registration is required. Also The Rookery will be closed on Jan. 3 for controlled hunting.
CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio -- Almost nothing stops the slings and arrows at Geauga Park District . Just because the temperatures drop doesn’t mean the arrows stop flying. The popular archery programs are targeted to go on all winter long — they simply move indoors to the warmth of The Rookery ’s Great Blue Heron Lodge at 10110 Cedar Road in Chesterland.
Introductory sessions are available1-2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28 for families with children ages nine and up and 12:30-2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29 for kids ages nine to 16. Adults only get their chance 2:30-4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29. Attendance at the intro session is required to participate in the park’s other archery programs. If you’ve previously taken the intro session adults can participate in friendly archery games for adults 3-4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28 to improve your aim and confidence. All participants must be at least 50 inches tall and wear closed-toe shoes. Adults must accompany children at all times. No children under nine-years-old are permitted. Rangers and signs will be posted at the park entrance as a reminder. Controlled hunting has been used since the 2007-08 season to maintain healthy, balanced populations of plants and animals on Park District properties. Time has proven it a viable management tool and a proactive approach to the Park District’s mission. Learn more about the program atThe Institute for Learning in Retirement-East offers 18 continuing education classes in its winter term beginning Tuesday, Jan. 13 and running for six weeks through Thursday, Feb. 13. This fall’s courses cover a wide variety of topics including art appreciation, current events, history, science, literature, religion, and film. A few of the course titles are: Cleveland Rocks! , Religion in American Culture, Intermediate Mah Jongg,” and a film class on Leading Ladies – Then and Now. The full course schedule can be found atClasses meet typically once a week and are held Tuesdays through Thursdays. Most are in person at Temple Emanu El, at the corner of Brainard and Emery Roads, 4545 Brainard Road in Orange Village. In addition to weekly courses, the term includes five single-session in-person presentations, and one course via Zoom. Register by Thursday, Jan. 8 by mail only, which keeps costs low. Your registration will be confirmed by email. Membership is required to enroll, which costs $30 per year and covers through June 30. Each six-week course costs $35 while single-session presentations are $10 each.the senior learning program is affiliated with Baldwin Wallace University and provides college-level courses in a friendly, non-competitive environment without exams. All instructors are experienced professionals and retired professors. The program’s aim is to provide senior adults with an accessible and inexpensive educational and social experience.
