Stephen Akuoko launched a £10,000 online campaign to 'repurpose his life' and have it 're-evaluated' after his conviction by Watford Borough Council. Meanwhile, customers reacted with concern and suspicion with ready meals sold in corner shops, branding them 'not fit for human consumption' and finding plastics, metals, and mould. After a pan-European operation, the Daily Mail investigated pre-prepared meals from Sigma Foods and other suppliers and found similar issues with no vegetables or excessive filling, prompting HSA Foods to face Food Standards Agency inspections.

A vile discovery inside the home of a man who was cooking ready meals to be sold in nearby shops reignited suspicion around the quick lunches from unfamiliar brands on offer in corner shops.

The house of Stephen Akuoko, 62, contained dead fish piled in the bathtub of his cluttered bathroom, and the squalid conditions of his kitchen where he prepared the ready meals. His conviction was secured by Watford Borough Council after a two-year investigation involving Trading Standards, where he admitted to two food safety offences and faced a two-year suspended prison sentence and a five-year ban from operating any food business.

Disgruntled diners claimed they have found flies, hair, plastic, metal, and mould in their ready meals, with some alleging they contracted food poisoning. The DS proved their case with stomach-turning pictures taken inside Akuoko's home, highlighting the hazards and unfit nature of the meals. A visit to HSA Foods' factory on Drury Lane Industrial Estate in Wembley, west London, revealed a cluttered and unclean place lacking the hygiene standards needed to prepare food safely
