Readers share unbelievable stories of high school drama, including a daredevil pilot during a homecoming game and a wildly unqualified principal whose tenure was marked by bizarre decisions, unfounded fears, and chaotic events.
'What was the crazy drama in your high school?' People wrote in, and the stories were wild, sometimes disturbing, and proved that high school drama knows no age. Here's what people said:'A senior took flying lessons, just so he could buzz the football field during the homecoming game. Scared the shit out of everyone — it was wild watching the football players from both teams scramble. He became a successful criminal defense attorney.'
'Our principal was promoted to district supervisor, and his replacement was a woman who had no educational experience beyond a work study at a kindergarten in college. She was hired as a political favor since her husband was a huge defense contractor who had struck a deal with the county. An awful and vapid individual, a former cheerleader with the stereotypical HR power mentality. She tried to become the 'cool mom principal,' but was emotionally unable to handle the adult role. She was convinced that our upper-middle-class high school was besieged by gangs and drugs. Hired 'awareness aides,' like something out of'She decided our mascot, a Scottish Highlander, was sending confusing sexual messages by wearing a dress , and changed our mascot to a Scottish Terrier. Then she herself dressed as the mascot at games in a retrofitted black hippo suit. She made pep rallies mandatory, where she gave 30-minute speeches and forced a bunch of jaded teens to play children's games. She was known to cry during announcements that she herself made about random stuff that bothered her . My graduation lasted four hours during a cicada swarm in 90-degree heat. She gave speeches, hired guests to give more speeches, all while we were getting pelted by thumb-sized insects. We got our diplomas two hours into this debacle, which was a mistake because when we got them, we all started leaving. She got upset, yelling over the microphone that we still had two hours left, sit down, you can't leave, and someone unplugged the PA system. Even parents were sick of it after three hours. Years later, she tried to put on her own 'Lollapalooza' by hiring questionable bands and starring herself as the main star. She eventually got demoted to another school, where she was fired for trying to get more Asian people in the district to 'increase the school GPA,' and for saying that aloud.'
'One time, inexplicably, a teacher’s dick just fell out of his trousers, and he carried on the lesson without noticing . This continued for a good 10 minutes before he screamed and ran out. The headmaster came in and insisted we never speak of it again. Naturally, a song was written about the event called, 'Scrotum and Ball.''
'We were banned from singing it, but they did a surprise rendition during our final leavers day ceremony, and even the teachers smiled.'
'I went to an all-girls convent school in the '70s. We planned a school-sanctioned ski trip over spring break and rented two cabins at the ski lodge. Two female teachers agreed to chaperone: our homeroom teacher and our French teacher. I was in the cabin with our homeroom teacher, a young woman in her mid-20s, and, oddly, she brought her husband but didn't tell us beforehand. Even odder, our French teacher — a married woman with two daughters, who also attended our school — was the chaperone of the other cabin. She did not bring her husband; she brought her LOVER, who was a gorgeous French man in his late 20s named 'Lambert' . We were all very confused, but, well, it was the '70s and the four adult chaperones were all so casual about it.'
‘When we got back to school, we kind of forgot about it until one day, the French teacher came into the classroom acting all butthurt and saying things like, 'Well, I hope you're all happy now!' We didn't really know what was going on, but apparently one of the other girls told her mother, and she called the Archbishop, and I guess both teachers were fired because they did not come back the following year.’
True Detective 'A male teacher was caught in a hot tub with two of the female students. All were naked. Parents of today, always be on the lookout for the teacher who insists that students call them by their first name.'
'A homecoming queen was caught in the back of a van with a married man. The same night she was crowned.'
'A white girl danced with a Black boy at a student dance. A bunch of outraged white parents demanded that the principal and the teachers who chaperoned the event be fired. Black and white students who hadn't had any problem with the dancing walked out of classes and started marching around the school to protest the parents' demands. The principal and teachers weren't fired, but there were no more dances held on school property while I attended that school.'
'A few of the seniors put the gym teacher's Volkswagen Beetle in a tree. The janitor also burned down our high school, all the way to the ground. Yes, school was in session. Our track coach produced Olympic gold medal winner Bob Seagren.'
'A senior on the football team and the coach were caught having sex in the equipment room. The coach was married and had kids, and was always talking about Christian values. He taught Sunday school. The football player was an alpha, and a big bully, who called some kids gay slurs.'
'A girl turned 18 during her senior year and started dating one of the teachers. He was all gray-haired, but I don't think he was as old as he looked; he was probably mid-40s. He was Mormon, had a wife and two little kids. A group of us went to complain to the principal because it was clear there was favoritism, and we thought it was so inappropriate and that we were revealing a huge scandal! The principal admonished us to mind our own business, that they were both adults, and if it was okay with his wife, there was no issue with the school. We were stunned into silence. The teacher and the student grew bolder and would walk the halls holding hands, and kiss goodbye at the door to his class between periods. A couple of us told our parents, demanding that something be done to put a stop to it. They all just casually said that the girl was 18. An adult. Leave it alone.'
'There was an unannounced protest against the Vietnam War. A huge number of students gathered all over the football field and the surrounding lawn. The administration turned on the sprinkler system, then used pepper spray on the students as they fled. It was absolute chaos!
Although, 'A very popular drama teacher came out as gay and was fired. Most of us went on a student strike and refused to go to school unless they reversed the decision. Over a thousand students participated. The school district doesn’t get money if students don’t show up. After a week, we won, and he was reinstated. In the same year, our graduation ceremony had four streakers. Only one was caught.'
He collected all the money and embezzled it. Gave some to a friend. IDK how he thought he was going to get away with it? Anyway, he went to prison.
'One student showed up in full combat gear from the Vietnam era, complete with an M-16. It was for a history class presentation. Nobody was upset, as school shootings were years in the future. One guy forgot to study for a test, so he backed his truck into a power pole and blacked out the school. Never proven to be deliberate, but the students knew. Another graduating, a senior rode his motorcycle down the main hall.'
