For some reason, Ram has not offered its heavy-duty off-road pickup truck with a diesel engine—until now. For the 2027 model year, the Power Wagon finally joins crosstown rivals by giving customers the choice of an oil-burning powerplant. And just like that, Ram can claim bragging rights when it comes to torque in this specific niche, as the Cummins' 1075 pound-feet surpasses GM's Duramax and Ford's Power Stroke, which churn out 975 and 1050, respectively.The modern-day Power Wagon has been around since 2005, so what took so damn long to put a diesel in it? Well, as customer demand grew, someone with say-so at Ram finally gave the green light to ditch the front-mounted winch. With that out of the way, engineers could make room for the turbo-diesel's intercooler. Now the truck's gas-fed 6.4-liter Hemi V-8, which makes 405 hp and 429 pound-feet, is joined by the Cummins 6.7-liter straight-six with 430 horses and the aforementioned titanic torque figure.The Power Wagon has standard four-wheel drive, and the Cummins engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a 3.42 rear axle ratio. Ram claims this setup can tow up to nearly 20,000 pounds with the newly available fifth-wheel gooseneck hitch. The HD off-roader can also now be equipped with a self-leveling rear suspension. Just like before, it rolls on knobby 35-inch all-terrain tires, and if its 13.2 inches of ground clearance isn't enough, the Power Wagon's belly is protected by steel skid plates. The truck's other notable hardware includes a disconnecting front anti-roll bar for improved articulation as well as electronically locking front and rear diffs.The Power Wagon's interior remains a spacious place, and it comes standard with a heated front bench seat. Of course, buyers can opt for a pair of buckets wrapped in leather and equipped with heated and ventilated cushions. Ram also offers a variety of interior options, from a larger 14.5-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen, a passenger-side display, extra leather surfaces, and a 17-speaker Harman Kardon stereo.The new Cummins-powered Ram Power Wagon will reach dealerships sometime in the second half of this year. While the company hasn't yet released pricing for the rest of the heavy-duty lineup, nor the gas-fed Power Wagon, the diesel version of the latter will start at $88,470—$4500 more than the current Hemi-powered truck.➡️ Skip the lot.
