ANCHORAGE , Alaska - Members of the around 1,000-strong University of Alaska Anchorage Class of 2026 walked the stage at the Alaska Airlines Center Sunday as they officially transitioned from students to alumni.
“Now, you are part of history at UAA,” University Chancellor Cheryl Siemers said during her speech. “A member of a community of Seawolves who choose knowledge, opportunity and the courage to dream big. ” Sunday’s commencement was an especially noteworthy one for two reasons, both of which were represented in the lineup of speakers at the event. Spurlock used part of her speech to highlight that, in her case, as well as anyone’s, every graduate’s journey is unique.
“When I learned I was the youngest graduate, I also learned that the average age of this spring’s graduating class is 28,” she said at the podium. “Think about that. That means that this room is filled with people who started at different times, faced different challenges and still made it to this moment.
“That’s what makes today so special,” she continued. “Because there are very few times in life where you get to be in a room like this where we’re all celebrating a shared accomplishment. ” The second speaker of note was University of Alaska President Pat Pitney, who presided over her final commencement in the position after more than twenty years working in the University of Alaska system, including the last four in her current role.
“Thirty-five years ago, I sat in one of those seats,” the UAF graduate and Olympic gold medalist recalled. “And it’s provided me a foundation. I chose to stay mostly with the University of Alaska system, but I also chose to serve the state. Find your purpose.
Find your passion. Give it your all. And please, please, please find a purpose here in Alaska. ”Wasilla teenager arrested for fatal shooting at house partyFairbanks nonprofit assessing damage after flood damages children's toys
