With a focus on innovation and community feedback, Questline's upcoming title aims to recapture the essence of classic RPG experiences while modernizing the genre. It promises to surpass current standards and become a leader in RPG innovation.
The video game world has witnessed remarkable success stories, but few have achieved the commercial and critical acclaim of certain game series. These games have become not just incredibly popular but also subjects of endless discussion and debate. It is a series that I find myself constantly captivated by, and I firmly believe it provides a superior gaming experience.
Bethesda's fantasy RPG series is not merely good, great, or excellent; it resides in a realm of brilliance that few series ever attain. Unfortunately, it has been 15 years since the last mainline installment, making it challenging to maintain the fervor for its greatness. While numerous re-releases exist, they often fail to capture the original essence. As a result, the gaming landscape has seen new contenders emerge, some offering equally compelling, if not superior, adventures. However, one upcoming game, from Questline and its parent company Awaken Realms, is poised to not just meet the astronomical hype surrounding it, but to truly exceed it. This isn't just because the extended development period inherently raises expectations, but also because Bethesda's current trajectory suggests a shift in priorities and design philosophies. The anticipation centers on this game potentially surpassing everything Bethesda has released in the past decade and a half. This new approach to world design, combat, quests, writing, narrative, and even art direction promises to raise the bar, surpassing what was once considered the pinnacle of RPG development. This upcoming game aims to offer rich, meaningful choices, with quests that are unexpected, surprising, and masterfully written, invoking a genuine sense of awe and wonder, even amidst the hardships of its world. This game strives to expand upon the core ideas that Bethesda once held sacred, while simultaneously modernizing the experience to feel innovative rather than iterative. Where Bethesda has often simplified its once-acclaimed approach to player choice and exploration, this game doubles down on player expression and complex storytelling, providing challenging and rewarding combat and deeper player-directed exploration. It is acknowledged that this upcoming game might not be perfect, particularly given the constraints of its development budget. However, it delivers an experience that achieves what the developer is setting out to do. The game seems to have significantly benefited from being developed in close collaboration with its burgeoning community. Launching into Early Access allowed Awaken Realms to adapt the core experience based on player feedback, a process Bethesda has struggled with years after release. The game appears to have taken a page from Larian’s success, building both a devoted fanbase and a thorough understanding of player expectations. I've always supported games that avoid development in a vacuum. A game shouldn't and cannot benefit from a lone development process. After over a decade of development and drawing inspiration from a range of now-outdated gameplay conventions, such games may well falter. Spiders, on the other hand, created something reminiscent of the iconic BioWare formula, while still feeling entirely unique. They innovated where BioWare had regressed, elevating the ideas and concepts established by the once-legendary studio, even with their budget constraints. It is unlikely that Spiders will receive the recognition it deserves, despite creating genuinely inspired RPGs. Instead, it set out to replicate the traditional BioWare experience that had largely been abandoned. I mention this because I believe that Questline and Awaken Realms are following a similar path, but with Bethesda as the studio they are drawing from. The upcoming game isn't merely another Scrolls-like title attempting to replicate the success of past games. Rather, it represents a genuine effort to continue the legacy Bethesda has seemingly abandoned, to build upon the foundation that made the earlier titles so beloved. In many ways, the upcoming game is succeeding, creating something new that embodies the spirit that made many people fall in love with the original games. Questline's upcoming game has a profoundly good foundation from which the studio can build further experiences that outclass what Bethesda has been offering for years. I don’t mean to suggest Questline or Awaken Realms are without their own shortcomings. Still, I firmly believe that Questline is poised to become the next Spiders, the next studio to break new ground, elevate an experience abandoned by another developer, and deliver genre-defining RPG gameplay that will forever surpass the efforts of said original developer
