University of Washington tight end Quentin Moore and wide receiver Omari Evans signed free-agent contracts with the Washington Commanders and Kansas City Chiefs, respectively, following the conclusion of the NFL draft. This brings the total number of UW players pursuing NFL opportunities to nine.
Quentin Moore faces an uphill battle to secure a spot on an NFL roster, a reality he likely anticipated. His path to becoming a tight end at the University of Washington wasn't conventional, and the NFL draft confirmed this, as he wasn't among the 257 players selected over seven rounds.
However, the 6-foot-5, 260-pound Moore quickly found an opportunity, signing a free-agent contract with the Washington Commanders. Joining him in pursuing his NFL dream is former Husky wide receiver Omari Evans, who signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. This brings the total number of University of Washington players from last season's team with NFL prospects to nine. Moore's strengths lie in his exceptional blocking ability, a skill highly valued in the professional ranks.
Scouts believe this could be his ticket to a pro football career. Evans, standing at 6-foot and weighing 190 pounds, brings a different skillset to the table – blazing speed. His journey to this point has also been unique. Seven years ago, Moore initially attended Independence College in Kansas due to academic challenges preventing direct entry into the UW.
He played one season before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the following year, leading to his transfer to Washington for the 2021 season. Moore reflects on the challenges, stating, 'It's the up and down of those seven years, but I've come out the other side. There's a light at the end of the tunnel and I'll keep going.
' He will now attempt to prove his NFL worth under his third Husky coach, transitioning from Jimmy Lake to Kalen DeBoer and now Jedd Fisch. Moore emphasizes the importance of film study, believing his on-field performance speaks for itself. He suggests teams review his key plays, specifically highlighting his block on a 68-yard touchdown run by Jordan Washington against Purdue, where he neutralized the last line of defense.
Moore's football lineage adds another layer to his story, being the son of Mark Quentin Moore, a former NFL cornerback drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in 1987, who also played in the CFL and WLAF. Omari Evans, hailing from Killeen, Texas, saw action in 11 games for the Huskies last season, starting in four. Despite battling injuries, he recorded 17 receptions for 254 yards and a single touchdown – a 59-yard score in his debut game against Washington State.
Evans is hoping to secure a position with the Chiefs, showcasing his impressive athleticism at the Husky Pro Day, where he clocked a 4.25-second 40-yard dash and achieved a 41-inch vertical leap. Evans acknowledged his disappointment at not being drafted but remains confident in his abilities, stating, 'It didn't go the way I expected it to go... Things happen. I know what I can do.
' Both Moore and Evans represent the resilience and determination of collegiate athletes striving to reach the pinnacle of professional football. Their journeys, though different, highlight the diverse paths players take to pursue their NFL dreams.
