Concerns and Charges Over Unexplained Deaths and Exposures in New Mexico

In a rural New Mexico home, at least three people died and more than a dozen first responders were exposed to an unidentified substance, which led to their quarantining and assessments. Meanwhile, the mayor of Mountainair mentioned drug use as a factor in the deaths.

Three people are dead and more than a dozen first responders had to be quarantined and assessed for possible exposure to an unidentified substance after being called to a suspected drug overdose at a rural New Mexico home on Wednesday.

The fourth person inside the home was being treated at a hospital in Albuquerque. During the response, first responders were exposed to the substance and began experiencing symptoms including nausea and dizziness. Albuquerque Fire Rescue Hazmat teams were assisting at the scene in Mountainair, New Mexico, in efforts to identify the substance involved. Some residents, however, expressed frustration about drug use in the community on social media.

The mayor of Mountainair, Peter Nieto, said indications were pointing toward drugs as a possible factor in the deaths at the home, but no threat to the public was identified. Today marks the first Ironman Jacksonville event, which was affected by traffic delays and safety concerns. The organizers of the race are weighing changes after the event's completion.
