A Florida man has been charged with animal cruelty in a disturbing case.
According to Martin County authorities, witnesses reported seeing a man, later identified as 62-year-old John Sparhawk, choking his 5-month-old puppy. Deputies got involved after people heard the puppy’s cries, with Sparhawk allegedly holding the dog above his head and strangling it.
The dog ended up being taken to an emergency veterinarian hospital. Deputies said veterinarians determined the animal was suffering from cocaine exposure, which triggered a medical episode. Authorities said Sparhawk told detectives the puppy may have eaten something bad in the woods.
However, veterinarians confirmed the animal’s condition was consistent with being exposed to cocaine. The pup remains in protective custody and Sparhawk is facing charges, including being arrested for an outstanding warrant, the sheriff’s office said.
