The goal is to improve survivability and save lives.
HOUSTON COUNTY , Ala. - The Southeast Health Foundation is extending the PulsePoint app to rural Houston County , bringing life-saving technology to areas with longer emergency response times. For every minute a person’s heart stops, their chance of survival decreases 7 to 10 percent with each minute that passes. In the city of Dothan , the average EMS response time is 5 minutes. In Houston County , response times average eight minutes.
“Well, in Houston County, we also have a compatible modern response system, but we’re looking at eight minutes. It’s 80% chance of life lost when so many of us participate in the HeartSafe training program,” said Sean Gibson, executive director of the Southeast Alabama EMS Council. The Southeast Health Foundation and first responders worked to launch PulsePoint in the city of Dothan. The app’s reach will now extend into rural Houston County. The Houston County Commission is in support of the move. For Chairman Brandon Shoupe, the issue is personal.
“My father passed away from sudden cardiac arrest about three years ago. And so, just that time delay in the rural parts of Houston County, sometimes it can take 10, 15 plus minutes for an ambulance for first responders to arrive,” Shoupe said. “So this is a way to encourage, you know, members to become knowledgeable about CPR. “This app will alert them when someone is nearby who needs chest compressions. And so, those chest compressions, given within a few minutes, could save, and I believe it will save lives.”
PulsePoint allows CPR-trained citizens to be a stand-in for emergency medical services until first responders reach the patient, increasing the patient’s chance of survival.“This app actually will provide information to the emergency responders, such as your EMS agencies of your community, your fire departments, and your sheriff’s department. And as those telecommunicators, because they’re a key piece of this, as they’re putting in information through this app, for our professional responders, they’re going to be able to see what these telecommunicators are sending out without creating an extra step for the communicator,” Gibson said.“If ten people get the alert, maybe two will show up, and those two can truly save a life,” Gibson said.
