Laurel after a report of a house fire caused by a lightning strike. Once they got there, crews didn’t see any signs of a fire outside. Inside, they found that lightning had struck the back of the house near the roof, entered a closet and followed a wire shelf. Lt.
Christine Shores says this highlights the importance of having a fire extinguisher at home and knowing how to use it.
“It’s something that you would purchase and hope to never use. But having a fire extinguisher can really give you time or in his case, you are able to put out the fire before you even needed the fire department,” Lt. Shores said. If the fire extinguisher doesn’t do the job, then get out of your home and call 911.
Fire extinguishers should be apart of your overall fire safety plan according to the National Fire Protection Association. Make sure you also have working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan. You can purchase fire extinguishers at your local home improvement store. There are also new tools on the market like “Flame Out” fire fighting spray.
